I have ordered for this book twice but I did not receive any of them, the first one was in April 26, 2013 order number #109-4248722-2252266 the estimated delivery date was June 13, 2013 and the second one was in September 26, 2013 order number #107-5738022-8162665, the estimated delivery date was November 8, 2013. A Finely Crafted Work

There is a Sanskrit saying about knowledge which ends with:

Now it's fair to say that I've been following Dan Djurjevic's blog for quite a few years now and benefiting from the pearls of wisdom derived from his learnings, teachings and research into a plethora of martial arts experiences these past 35 years. Up to and including a brilliant synthesis of style which he has christened “Muidokan''. So when he began his foray into publishing, it seemed only natural to explore his wisdom in a discipline which I had only a superficial knowledge of. On the back cover of 'The Essential Jo', the author makes it clear that 'the book can also be used for beginners for home study' Having recently begun the exploration of kobudo locally, and getting the feeling of what it's like to create mayhem with a 6-foot staff, this unfamiliar weapon piqued my curiosity. The author gives us a rich history of the whys and wherefores of the weapon as well as a detailed understanding of how he approaches its teaching and employment within the system he has derived. There then follows an equally well-written and detailed description of basics including stances, postures, and the proper way to hold the weapon. Thereafter, a sequence of techniques, and drills from simple to complex, all well-written, and equally well and carefully photographed. Notwithstanding it all being well put together, the reality is that there is just so much one can glean from a text. As a retired surgeon and professor, I can vouch for the fact that there's certainly a plus in getting your hands into it under the guide of an experienced mentor. There's something about nuance and technique in movement, as seen in person, that just can't jump off the page. You can take that one to the bank if you've ever studied dance. Video would only be of use to an advanced practitioner. At least a year's background in karate/kobudo training would be a plus for anyone desiring to approach this as a supplementary exercise. Those who are already advanced and skilled in the art
should find this an interesting comparison/contrast to the philosophy,knowledge and skill they have already been infused with. In closing, if you maintain a martial arts library, regarless of interests, this is definitely one sensei whose teachings are worth having at your fingertips.

Dan Djurdjevic explains the use of Jo in a very professional way. It is difficult to find in the internet material related with this weapon, as most you could find is mainly devoted to long staff (bo). Good as introduction, but less good as a reference book

The book explains the momentum, heat and mass transfer in a quite accessible form. It is well organized and the reader will find quite quickly, what (s)he needs. The book is very pedagogic. It is devoted to the heat transfer theory. Consequently, it contains only a few experimental correlations. I would recommend it for the undergraduate and graduate students. The people concerned with the industrial applications will need to accompany it by a handbook, which provides heat transfer correlations in specific cases.

About the Author

Fotis Rigas is Associate Professor, National Technical University of Athens, School of Chemical Engineering and has been a Visiting Professor at National Autonomous University of Mexico. His current research and academic activities are in the areas of process safety and bioremediation of contaminated sites. He has published or presented over 150 papers and book chapters in the fields of his activities and is a reviewer of papers in 36 international journals.

Paul Amyotte is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and the C.D. Howe Chair in Engineering at Dalhousie University in Canada. His research and practice interests are in the areas of inherent safety, process safety and dust explosion prevention and mitigation. He has published or presented over 200 papers in the field of industrial safety and is the Editor of the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries. He is also author of another CRC Press book, Process Plants: A Handbook for Inherently Safer Design, Second Edition (2010).

The book serves as a great resource for engineers who look forward to advancing their knowledge on hydrogen safety! It is well written and easy to follow along with. I used it for my final paper on 'hydrogen vehicles'. I highly recommend it to other graduate students too.

Good Information - Somewhat lacking

Let me preface this with the fact that I'm a computer science student who already knows a pretty good deal about Java OO and I'm a pretty obsessed with efficiency already. I had to buy this book for a class.

First things first: This book lost one whole star because when I first bought it I thought I had been ripped off(I bought it as 'new'). Let me explain ---
The book comes entirely in black and white, and while I'm not really a stickler for that sort of thing -- it appears as if the source material was originally in color and someone had just hit 'B&W' on the printing press or something. The result is a book riddled with white fade lines throughout the book, making all diagrams and gui screenshots impossible to read. On top of all of that, there's no real formatting other than line numbers to code. Besides all that the though the code is hard to follow anyway due to unorganized feeling I get when trying to read the text - the author will dance around a class implementation without actually showing you the class's code until the very end of the topic, which is frustrating. This makes code examples extremely hard to dissect and therefore I can't really attest to any errors because I didn't have the patience to go through them all.

The book lost another star because although in chapter 2 it discusses in great detail what Big Oh is, I believe it fails to stress how important algorithmic efficiency actually is - perhaps the author feels it isn't that important. I say this because although the book has very good and detailed information on things like List and Binary Tree API, it only stresses what I assume to be the author's favorite implementations and not necessarily the most efficient implementation. (Example: 1 page(!) on array implementations of Binary Trees)

All of that said, it is not a terrible book by any standards. You will learn the fundamentals of Data Structures - if you don't get confused by the winding explanations. Is it worth 100 dollars+? No, you can find the same information for much cheaper in infinitely better formats and 'straight to the point' examples in such books as 'Core Java' by Cay Horstmann and Gary Cornell. You should also check out Robert Sedgewick's book on Algorithms (Fourth Edition). Books such as those are infinitely better because even after reading them they serve as great references long after you've mastered the material... This book, not so much.

It reveals that there are two general ways of thinking about the legal and the political: the modern which sees all through the lens of the state, and the traditional which begins with individuals and with the normative relations that exist between them building only slowly towards the community and the state.

In the modern view, private law is understood as a method for achieving certain social goals. As such, it can be overlooked by political philosophy. For the traditional view, on the other hand, private law is of central philosophical importance, because it is there that we observe a society's enunciation of its most fundamental political and legal values. Arguing that an understanding of the traditional view is essential to an understanding of private law and political life, this book highlights how the modern conception is seriously distorting in this regard.

A story unfolds throughout the chapters: the story of the growth and decline of the traditional view in political and legal thought. It challenges the modern fixation with the state, arguing for a return to the traditional view of legal and political community.
