No histology text is complete without photos

While the text itself covers the material adequately, it seems odd that a histology book would be entirely dependent on illustrations instead of photos. I guess it was to save cost but it makes it difficult to translate what the text says into what one would actually expect to see on a histology slide. While its not like histology atlases are hard to come by, this book would have been much better if it didn't require the use of an additional source.

good flow of ideas

I bought this book as a reference to support a course I teach, in research, and for beginners of histology it offers a nice easy to follow flow of ideas. I enjoy the book myself as it's a great reference to have if interested in this area.

I highly recommend this for studying and supplementing physiology, molec cell bio, and histology lectures in medical school. It is a wonderful resource that breaks down a lot of touch concepts very simply.

Miriam's Kitchen blends recipes and food reminiscences with family narratives and observations about the author's personal evolution as a Jew. Ehrlich weaves the stories from four generations of family life, punctuated with powerful and often tragic memories. While her mother-in-law, Miriam, is teaching her to make chicken livers with noodles, Ehrlich unexpectedly learns how Miriam, her mother, and husband survived a Nazi labor camp in Poland during the Holocaust. Using vivid and bare yet discreet words, she graphically tells what they suffered and the nightmares that still haunt them.

Ehrlich's own story covers her transformation from a child whose family lit Sabbath candles but went boating on Yom Kippur, to an adult who chooses an Orthodox life marked by ambivalence about the rigors of being kosher and pride in what she is passing on to her children. Recipes for Honey Cake, Noodle Pudding, and many others are buried treasures hidden among Ehrlich's intense words. Sadly omitted is a recipe for potato kugel. Her grandmother uses this tempting pudding to good-naturedly test, taunt, and ultimately as the means for accepting her daughter Selina's non-Jewish fianc� into the family. Ehrlich, a former writer for BusinessWeek, writes with humor and passion about her journey from ambivalent Jew to a woman who observes tradition and teaches her children about their ethnic heritage. Her story begins when she meets Miriam, her future mother-in-law, a Polish Holocaust survivor who "guarded culinary specialties in her mind during years when possession and certainties were ripped from her hands." Through Miriam, Ehrlich awakens to dormant memories and traditions in her past and gradually decides that her own family life would have greater meaning if she made her kitchen kosher. The author opens a window on a culture and tradition that her readers may know nothing about, discussing religious and dietary laws and sharing over two dozen recipes for traditional foods. Orthodox readers will likely see themselves in descriptions of the humor and ambivalence involved in trying to incorporate the traditions in today's society. The writing is crisp and smooth. An appealing, sensitive account of an assimilated Jewish woman's efforts to embrace the religious traditions of her ancestors. Former Business Week reporter Ehrlich (Nellie Bly, 1989) recounts a childhood where Judaism was merely kosher-style. Like so many other immigrants and children of immigrants, Ehrlich's left-wing parents shunned many of their religion's constraints. While pork didn't make it to their kitchen, shrimp did. And eating corned beef on ``Jewish'' rye became their most Jewish experience, ``the taste without the blessing.'' After Ehrlich married, she hungered for something more, finding that cultural nourishment from her mother-in-law, Miriam, who as a teenager had been sent to a Nazi work camp, but survived the horror with her spiritual pantry intact. From this living link to her grandmothers and their traditions, the author was able to learn the recipes to more than a culinary Judaism. The dietary laws led to Sabbath observance, which enriched her family with 24 hours of ``contemplation, rest, and praise as a gift . . . that punctuates the temporal world.'' Ehrlich's journey is not without occasional lapses and misgivings. She worries about the parochialism of her children's Jewish day school and prefers to tell professional contacts that she's a vegetarian, so that her dietary restrictions don't ``drive in a wedge.'' Nor is she completely comfortable with the Orthodox exclusion of women from the traditional prayer quorum, or minyan. ``I hope that a minyan will gather when I die,'' she writes, ``and that it will have women in it.'' While Ehrlich is not all that sure whether prayer matters or God plays a personal role in our lives, she is certain that the religious traditions she has adopted have made her life far more meaningful. Replete with family narratives and over two dozen recipes, Miriam's Kitchen is much more than one woman's journey to spiritual fulfillment. The book is almost twenty years old now, and my book group wondered how anyone would manage to keep a kosher household when working full time and living in an isolated nuclear family (as most of us do). Recognizing the value of ritual and tradition, we also questioned the cost (not just financial) of rituals developed in different times. As a foodie and someone who cooks almost every meal from scratch, I can appreciate the work involved! In a community, I can see this could be possible, but the division of labor seems questionable in today's society.

I tried the egg salad: You should too

I read this book many years ago and enjoyed it then. I recently rediscovered it on my bookshelf and again, I am swept away by the deliciousness of the book.
For anyone that has ever tried to learn old world recipes and learn to maintain a kosher home/kitchen the book speaks volumes. I know many people say the book is repetitive, and it is. I suppose it doesn't bother me because I understand how many times a person and try and fail at maintaining a kosher kitchen and how many times a recipe can fail despite every good intention.
I am not a mushroom eater but I was particularly interested in the egg salad recipe in the book (It is not listed as the others are, just written about in the short chapter titled, "Egg Salad") I was interested enough to try it and I am glad I did. The cooked onion gives a real warm to the dish and I found that I could get away with very little salt. I used canned mushrooms that I had dried and reheated in the skillet with the onions. Very yum!

Everyone has a history, and everyone has a past. This past influences who we are and who we become. Traditions are passed down through generations in order to preserve the history of family. In Miriam's Kitchen by Elizabeth Ehrlich, the author compiles stories throughout her life in connection to recipes from her mother-in-law, a Holocaust survivor. The influence of her mother-in-law, Miriam, shapes Elizabeth's spiritual and religious journey. This memoir follows a women's awakening into religious and family values. The memoir is outlined throughout the span of a year, with each section encompassing a different month. These months make up her spiritual journey from longing to continuity. The religious journey outlined parallels Ehrlich's life as she grows into becoming a woman, a cook, and most importantly traditionally Jewish.
The author outlines the main idea that she is trying to convey perfectly in the last paragraph of the introduction. "I embrace them all. I consider the law, the restrictions, the presumptions of happiness, the doubt. I inventory layers of translucent recollection evoking food, love, home, apocrypha, anger, ritual, laughter, conflict and regret. The result is a collage, but also a way of life. That collage is my religion, and it is what I am passing on." (Ehrlich, 1998). This memoir is about wonder and interest, a search for a history, reclamation of tradition, and an integration of that tradition into the modern world.

One of my three favorite Grant Morrison books. And I've read them all.

I never thought we'd get all of this into one Omnibus. It's a giant book, yes, difficult I imagine to take to a coffee shop or even to a con to be signed. That said, this is one of my three favorite Grant Morrison books of all time. The other two are Animal Man and the soon to return to print Zenith (drawn by Steve Yeowell). Many consider X-men to have been inspired by the Doom Patrol. That said, Morrison's X-Men run, good as it is, is nothing compared to this series drawn mainly by Richard Case. This is the story of freaks that save the world. The most unlikely heroes taking on the weirdest and wildest concepts imaginable. Think of super heroes fighting the bad guys from The Invisibles or the Filth. It's weird. And a lot of fun. And the secret origin of the Chief. well, it's worth waiting for and reading towards (even if you disagree). This is Morrison's first truly weird book, but it's still rooted in a super hero universe, which may be why I liked it so much more than his Vertigo work.

"There is another world. There is a better world."

I've read a bulk of Morrison's work, and Doom Patrol stands among his best. An absurdist comic that serves as an excellent treatise on the medium, as well as the power and importance of imagination. In most of his work, Morrison's all about the long game, and Doom Patrol is no exception. And I assure you the conclusion is well worth the occassional dry issue.
As for the Omnibus itself, top marks all-around. Beautiful quality and presentation. A necessary addition to any comic enthusiast's library.

A Favorite at Bedtime

We love this book. My 16 month old son first fell in love with A Christmas Prayer, and asked for it months past Christmas. I finally broke down and decided to see if there was another in the series, and found this little gem. This book is a great reminder to give thanks to God for all of the little things (and big things) in life. The illustrations are cute and soft for bedtime. My son always finds something new to point out on each page. I'm sure we'll be reading this book for a long time.

Little ones can learn to be thankful and tell God in their prayers. Parents can teach and share with their toddlers these simple but meaningful prayers meant for bedtime, morning time, meal time and family time. Soft cuddly animals show children how they are thankful. Toddlers will learn to recognize familiar every day things. The illustrations are clear and simple with soft pastel colors which make the pictures warm and inviting to view. The soft rhyme and rhythm are soothing for little ears.

Adorable Book for Bedtime Routine

My family adores this book. We were given it as a gift and now we give it to everyone. It is a wonderful book to read at bedtime to your kids. It has a gentle rhythm that calms them down. It has age appropriate (simple, loving) messages about God and heaven. It is a part of our nightly routine and we love it.

A spoonful of adult humor helps the practical advice go down

Courtney Smith Kramer is Tom Cruise to my Cuba Gooding Jr., and she's got me shouting “show me the money!” right back at her through my kitchen cordless with this one.

Courtney slips straight-up real talk and data from science and anecdotes from actual people—who also know what they're taking about and also probably like being creative and having sex and social things—into a handsome package, sweetened with that's-what-she-saids and playful and jokes that any respectable teenage boy would snicker at too.

The author’s words poke each of us in the shoulder with a stern, unbent, Uncle Sam-looking index finger to say, “you're so money and don't even know or remember it, lady or man!!” and we don't feel the pain because we're still reeling at [peaceful, penis-fencing monkeys or “soft-handed windshield wiper action” or organizing a gynecocratic revolution or buying new loudspeakers].

You had me at "That's what she said"

I have a stack of books to read but I fast-tracked this book to the top of the list and read it right away. Courtney is the voice in my head when it comes to #ThatsWhatSheSaid; add in the massive amounts of facts, theories and concepts and you get this book. I have a critical thinking mind but have always had an aversion to the word "creativity" as I can't draw my way out of a paper bag or color within the lines. Kudos to Courtney for drawing parallels between creativity and sex; each chapter is an eye-opener and a mind-bender on how to jump start your creative mind. I feel smarter & inspired after reading "21 Reasons Creativity Is Like Sex" - isn't that the goal of any book?!

One Reason I Like Twenty-One Reasons

Iconoclastically creative Courtney Smith Kramer lures us into her world with the promise of a giggle and a bit of titillation, and then keeps us there. We find ourselves staying for the delight, the wit, the love of the topic. While others might have written the definitive tome on the subject, CSK uses her creativity to further reinforce her ideas. Breeze over a chapter, come back, go deeper, skim, repeat. It doesn’t matter how you attack her work and that is the beauty of her style. She proves her point on creativity by her very expression of it. It is beautifully pointed out that it is not linear and it is not metered. Creativity can be channeled and directed, if you know how. These ideas benefit not only those who consider themselves creative, but anyone who desires to find the best outcome to their obstacles. Without a doubt, this book will fully exercise your biggest sex organ (That would be your brain. Pervert!)

The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Contested Histories offers non-specialist readers insights into the causes and consequences of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A general introduction is followed by a detailed historical overview of the issues that have defined more than a century of political tensions and open hostilities.

Caplan highlights the tangible issues over which the parties are fighting, but returns frequently to examine some of the more intangible underlying factors that continue to hamper a peaceful resolution, such as the mutual sense of victimization shared by both parties. Giving voice to the competing narratives of both Palestinians and Israelis, this book breaks away from polemical approaches that have undermined academic discussion and political debates about the conflict. The author introduces readers to the major historiographical debates sparked by the dispute, and suggests more useful ways of explaining and understanding the obstacles to reconciliation and conflict resolution.

It is easy to take issue with an effort to provide a neutral perspective on the conflict. Partisans will inevitably view such projects as biased. I thought that Caplan made an admirable effort to present a clear, concise and impartial look at the historical controversies relating to the conflict.

Caplan is biased. Does not present a fair approach to history

I was excited to read this book, at first. However, the more I read the more I realized that Caplan neglected to include all information about the Israeli side of things. I think he may have did this so that his book seems balanced but not telling the entire story is unfair. I do not recommend this book for someone who is looking to a get a fair and balanced approach to the history the Middle East conflict. Instead I would recommend one of two reads: Mitchell Bard's "Idiot's Guide to the Middle East Conflict" or Michael Rydelniks "Understanding the Arab-Israeli Conflict: What the Headlines Haven't Told You".
