A broad reflection on John Paul II's Theology of the Body and how it applies to every day life for people of all ages. Highly explored and examined, Pope John Paul II's scripture-based reflections on human relationships and sexuality have captivated thousands of women and men around the globe. Yet few have discussed the implications of his theology for everyday life. Theology of the Body for Every Body offers us just that: a holistic reflection meaningful for everyday life. This outstanding book explains Pope John Paul II's foundational ideas and then looks to his encyclicals and writings on family, justice, labour and the Church to broaden the application of his Theology of the Body beyond simple and simplistic - sexual ethics. Bringing a female voice to the writings surrounding the Theology of the Body, Leah Perrault explores its deeper applications for sexual ethics within a vision for human growth, service and justice.

Review
Just beneath the surface, and at times exultantly surging through, this book is an Hallelujah chorus of thanksgiving to God for making us human. It is embued with a love for what is human, and a love of God for making us in our bodies the way we are, and in the Incarnation, for becoming what we are. This book is a little treasure, which will bring blessings for those who allow it to draw them into a personal conversation with God. Those who take the time to ponder each section, to reflect on the questions posed, will find this book has the effect of a great retreat, renewing, giving insight, leading one to become more at home in one s life, more turned towards the presence of God in it. --Bishop Donald Bolen, Diocese of Saskatoon

Living the Theology of Our Bodies, An Excellent Pastoral Application
By Susan Windley-Daoust
It’s the incarnation, stupid.
True, Leah Perrault is nothing but gracious when she writes Theology of the Body for Every Body (Montral: Novalis, 2012). She would never say “stupid.” But she does take her experience as a pastoral minister (as director of Pastoral Services in the diocese of Saskatoon) , a wife and mother of young children, and a teacher and writer on the Theology of the Body audiences to say with infectious joy: the Theology of the Body is about the incarnation of God and the bodily realities of being human.
Perrault (who also wrote a book on dating and the Theology of the Body) argues that the Theology of the Body literature is, more than anything, about what it means to be human. Most secondary interpreters focus on the sexual ethics within the audiences, and Perrault adds to that conversation in new ways. But she sees opportunities lost if we do not pay attention to “the first 500 pages of the audiences”: the theological anthropology and spirituality of John Paul II.
This is not an easy task. As she notes, John Paul II’s audiences are less linear, more thematic and circular in their argument. The audiences, especially here, have the feel of a theological exploration, full of wonder and mystery. But what John Paul does theologically is internally consistent, and best broken down through thematic treatment.
In Part I, Perrault uses short, eminently readable chapters to introduce salient motifs within the audiences: John Paul’s understanding and use of human experience, scripture, “original man,” the spousal meaning of the body, sacramentality, seeing through hope, and the philosophy of the acting person. As one who has written an anthropology of the audiences, I applaud her for the succinct thematic summary (I wish she had included a treatment of John Paul II’s Carmelite influences, but otherwise, I think she hits all the high notes). Besides providing some background outside the audiences, she peppers the first half of the book with pastoral examples.
But what may really open people’s eyes is the second half of the book, “Living the Theology of Our Bodies.” Perrault’s own background as a pastoral minister serves us here as she moves through narrative after narrative of Christians, young and old, single and married and divorced and widowed and consecrated, facing messy realities that require discernment as to how to give oneself to God through others. While Perrault connects the dots in some of the narratives to the Theology of the Body themes, other narratives are left to stand as evocative possibilities. It is fascinating and poignant reading, made important by the implied challenge given the reader: how is this lived reality--a decision between two goods, a process of dying, an opportunity to address a family conflict--a sign that points to God?
This is a joyful and practical book, written with conviction and deep knowledge of the Theology of the Body literature and its possibilities in helping people live in a way more open to God’s work within their selves and the world. I hope this publication marks the beginning of a sustained turn to the spiritual anthropology of the audiences, which not only grounds the audiences' latter section on the sacrament of marriage, but also provides a rich and deep way to see what it means to be created human, in relationship with the world, and destined for union with God.

A thin book that packs a powerful punch - a must-read!
By Sarah Reinhard
I heard about this book from a good friend, who rated it as one of the two books that everyone who has anything to do with the Catholic New Evangelization should read.
Theology of the Body for Every Body, by Leah Perrault (Novalis, 2012) is a thin book at less than 120 pages. And it's not a hard read.
But oh! It IS a WOW read, indeed!
Leah Perrault gives Theology of the Body a truly global application, because she steps away from all the theories and puts it right into everyday practice.
In Part 1, Perrault spends nine chapters exploring insight from John Paul II's Theology of the Body. She explains what it is, and even better, she takes us far beyond what we've started thinking about it as.
It's about more than sex: it's about how we are made. As Sister Helena Burns said in a talk I listened to recently, "If our bodies are made in the image of God, and theology is the study of God, then our bodies are theology textbooks!"
Perrault writes in a style that's straightforward and yet somehow still poetic. She brings out the beauty in the world around us even as she points us to more closely examine the beauty that we are made to be.
In Part 2, we get six chapters under the heading of "Living the Theology of Our Bodies." This is a study in application that is by far the best I've seen of its kind. TOB just became dinner table talk. It became something I can share with my 5th graders in a way they'll understand. It transformed me into a witness just by how I think.
I realize I sound like maybe I jumped off a diving board into an empty pool there, but I've spent nearly ten years being excited about Theology of the Body. In the season I'm in with small kids and lots of work (domestic and otherwise), I haven't been able to attend any of the institutes or classes that are cropping up like dandelions.
And I've wanted to. But I've settled for reading and stumbling along and praying.
Perrault has accomplished something remarkable with this thin gem of a book: she has taken Theology of the Body and made it into something that the Joe Schmoe can appreciate even as the aspiring scholar type gets a listing of resources and insights to use. She's reached out with wide open arms in a manner that's very like what I envision John Paul II holding.
This is a book I fully intend to reread more deeply chapter by chapter. I hope you'll consider reading it too. It's amazing and well worth sharing and rereading.
