  A nice little reference

  This is a thourough and concise reference addressing major clinical concepts. Its very colorful and easy to read, visually appealing, and far less daunting than the 2000+ page doorstops that are housed on the same shelf. Be warned, if you need a doorstop this book is not for you. This is just a major clinical concepts book with excellent diagrams and explanations. I would compare it to the BRS books, the Lange Review books, or the older NMS/Blueprints series in terms of content. If you are a fan of these types of texts then this book is for you!

  I bought this book because it is written by british authors which I think based on my experience of purchasing books are more informative than american authors. This book is a good book in clinical chemistry. Its main deficiency is that it is not comprehensive and does not include all the material experienced in the clinical chemistry lab. In general it is a good book for beginners.

Possibly useful for personal trainers and advanced bodybuilders, others should give it a pass. Doesn't work on Kindle device.

What do you get for a hundred bucks? Basically web bibliography pointing to articles the author has written for sites like testosterone nation.

Should that matter? Well, organizing and presenting that online material in a systematic way in theory has value, the problem is that so much of that material is written in bodybuilder jargon, e.g. " Using a traditional hip hinge like the RDL or the stiff-leg deadlift, work the descent of the movement with increased time under eccentric loading," or "... just think of turning the dumbbell shrug movement into a mosh pit at a Slip Knot concert. Don't be that guy." This certainly *sounds* like useful device, but for $100 I expect an author to put a little more effort into explaining himself, especially as he's pitched the "book" as being useful to people with only modest levels of experience.

This book has basically no illustrations or explanations; just a bunch of links to web articles/videos along with a few terse notes on proper execution that are likely only useful to someone already very familiar with the exercises. In some cases the advice requires the assistance of a personal trainer to execute (e.g. finding out exactly how far you can safely squat based on your personal anatomy with the aid of a goniometer).

Given that the Amazon description suggests this is (a) a book and (b) useful to people with only basic levels of experience, I'd be inclined to give it one star. However I'm giving it an additional star as benefit of the doubt; it seems like something that might be useful to a few people. I suggest that you google "John Rusin" on the site t-nation dot com. If these articles are useful to you individually, paying $100 to have them organized into some semblance of a program is probably a good deal. For most people it's an absurd amount of money to pay to be pointed to a bunch of web articles that probably won't mean much to them.

One final point: the ebook production values are extremely crude. It is in "Print Replica" format, which is basically just a dump of a printout (badly typeset) and DOES NOT WORK on a Kindle device -- not that that really matters since the real content is actually on the web in formats the Kindle can't handle. However the book doesn't work on the web reader either, and is extremely awkward to use on the Amazon Kindle app for Android (the links are at the bottom of the page and so attempting to access them most of the time 8/10 times brings up the page browser UI instead -- very frustrating). Basically it's only convenient to use in Amazon's desktop reader app for Mac or PC. For the price, and given the academic qualifications of the author, I was expecting an superbly produced book, not what seems more like a printout of someone's class notes.

Solid book with no "bs."

It was a good book with all of the fundamentals one needs to get great results in their fitness program based on their goals. A nice chapter on dietary advice helps the novice understand calories in relation to their personal goals as well. Being a personal trainer for over eight years, I was very pleased with this book and would recommend it to my clients.

The life and philosophy of a wise man

I once lived on the Yakima Reservation for a couple weeks, back in 1964. This constituted my entire experience with Native Americans until thirty years later I met a few Navajo and Pueblo people on a trip to the Southwest. So even though I worked as an anthropologist for many years, I had absolutely zip to do with Native Americans. I was aware that there is a huge amount of junk written and shown in movies about them; that they have been either lionized or demonized out of all proportion in America and in the world beyond. I always felt that "ethnic cleansing" was not invented in the Balkans. Only when such writers as Silko, Momaday, Alexie, and Erdrich emerged did I discover the other world of the Indian people, only the film "Smoke Signals" rang true to me. So, I wasn't sure, when I picked up LAME DEER: SEEKER OF VISIONS, co-authored by John (Fire) Lame Deer and Richard Erdoes, whether I was getting some kind of phony, "awesome-dude !" worshipful portrait of a Lakota "medicine man" or not.
Not to keep you waiting any longer---this is a wonderful book on several levels. First, it contains the life story of Lame Deer, a Lakota man born in South Dakota in 1903 at the absolute nadir of Lakota history. It tells how he grew up, surviving relentless hostility by local whites, went through many ways of life, had numerous escapades, and finally turned towards the traditional wisdom of his people, becoming a wise elder, knowledgeable in many aspects of life. He has that wry Indian humor, so different a personality to what was always presented by Hollywood. Nobody can read this book and not be impressed by this man. The second level of this book is that it presents Lakota culture from the point of view of a Lakota steeped in it over many decades, not the interpretation of it by an outside scholar. You will find chapters on the sacred sweat bath, on the holy pipes of red stone, on the meaningful symbols, on the yuwipi ceremony, the sun dance, the peyote church which came from elsewhere, the heyoka (sacred clowns) and more. Lame Deer wanted to tell the world about Lakota ways and get this all written down to preserve it for the generations to come of his own people. On a third level, this book reflects a very attractive cooperation between two people from backgrounds that could not have been more different: a Lakota man from the prairies of South Dakota and a Vienna-born refugee from Nazism, an Austro-Hungarian in the true sense of that multi-cultural empire. Richard Erdoes only introduces himself at the end; Lame Deer talks throughout the whole book.
The editing and proofreading could have been tighter in my 1972 edition-a lot of passages appear twice or more, for example-and that's why I gave this book four stars, but it is a five star book for students who want to read about the inside view of the world of another culture, it is a five star book for someone particularly interested in knowing Lakota culture and thought, and for anyone who still thinks that Indians were or are "primitive" people. This is a book that speaks to the common humanity of all of us under the four corners of the sky.

A powerful and funny book....

People here are prasing this book for the insight it gives into the lives of Native Americans. Not that this book isn't important for its take on Amerindian culture: to say that John Lame Deer doesn't have a grasp on what is important to himself and his people would be improper and negligent.
People are missing two of the things that make this book so powerful: its humor and its take on the white world that exists outside of the reservation. Erdoes commentaries on his Indian visitors, Lame Deer's comments on EVERYTHING, and the voice and process of this book are FUNNY. This book is well-constructed and fun to read. On to the second point: Lame Deer is fairly sucessful in making Europeans often look like clowns-- stripping their culture and sophistication, making them more human....
This book should have a much wider audience than it has ever had (and that is actually fairly substantial, strangely enough....) Not that this is a book that could change a person's life: it could at least give direction to the perplexed. I highly recommend this book....

The Man was as interesting as the Book

I had the great pleasure of meeting Lame Deer in the mid 1970's, when he came and spoke with a college class I was attending. Well, perhaps "spoke" is not the right word. Looking back from some 30 years later, I cannot say whether the presence he had was completely authentic, completely manufactured, or some combination of the two. But a very definite presence is most certainly what he had. He communicated as much through gesture, posture and his gaze as he did with his words.

And when I say he spoke "with" the class, that is exactly what I mean. Far more than most of the guest "lecturers" I have seen over the years, Lame Deer clearly attended to each question he was asked, as if it was the most important thing in his world for that moment.

I have not read the book in many years (it was lost in a move shortly after that visit) but I remember that it did an excellent job of taking me out of my customary perspective while allowing me to feel GOOD about it rather than threatened or "put down."

Great book for Brazilian authors

I must confess that for a long time I have wished someone would write this book. I review a lot of papers written by my fellow Brazilians and I have compiled a list of my own with the recurrent mistakes I see in them. And I was happy to see that the author has nailed most of them.

Obrigada, Jim, for writing this book and then revising the previous version, which had a number of annoying typos. The book has helped me spot mistakes I make and the mistakes made by other Brazilian authors. Additionally, it has a number of exercises that help solidify what we learn. Unlike other books on how to write science papers, the prose is interesting, humorous sometimes, and keeps the readers' attention. I was hooked from beginning to end.

I really recommend this "Handbook for Brazilian Authors" for a number of reasons. First, it gives a number of examples of typical grammar mistakes we Brazilians make and shows where they come from (for instance, the tendency to use the expression "along the time", which comes from the direct translation "ao longo do tempo"; incorrect use of prepositions from direct translation etc); second, it contains tips on how to shorten a text, how to be concise, precise and how to make sure that it is clear in the text "who did what". These, and other recurrent mistakes that have to do with the structure of one's mother tongue and direct translations of it are easy to avoid, if only we are made aware of them.

In summary, please read this book and study it carefully before submitting your paper for publication. It will cut your costs with language reviews and will make your contribution more understandable to your peers.

Useful and handy

James' book is clear, simple to follow and has a lot of tips for Brazilian authors. The book is full with exercises and has a lot of information that goes beyond English and the writing style, as it also contains important information about each section of the research paper and its specific style. A very helpful tool for technical science writing in English

This book is written in a very clear way which makes it very easy for Portuguese speakers to follow and use. The author guides the reader in detail through each section of a paper or grant giving plenty of examples of common mistakes made during technical writing, in particular the ones made by Portuguese speakers. I find this book not only essential for Brazilian and Portuguese authors but a great tool for anyone who needs to write scientific manuscripts in English.

About the Author
Theodore J. Lowi has been John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions at Cornell University since 1972. He was elected President of the American Political Science Association in 1990 and was cited as the political scientist who made the most significant contribution to the field during the decade of the 1970s. Among his numerous books are The End of Liberalism and The Pursuit of Justice, on which he collaborated with Robert F. Kennedy.

Benjamin Ginsberg is the David Bernstein Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Center for Advanced Governmental Studies at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the author or coauthor of 25 books, including Presidential Power: Unchecked and Unbalanced; Downsizing Democracy: How America Sidelined Its Citizens and Privatized Its Public; Politics by Other Means; The Consequences of Consent; The Worth of War; and The Captive Public. Ginsberg received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1973. Before joining the Hopkins faculty in 1992, Ginsberg was Professor of Government at Cornell. His most recent books are The Fall of the Faculty: The Rise of the All-Administrative University and Why It Matters; What the Government Thinks of the People; and Analytics, Policy and Governance.

Kenneth A. Shepsle is the George D. Markham Professor of Government and founding member of the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University. He is the author or coauthor of several books, including Politics in Plural Societies: A Theory of Democratic Instability; The Giant Jigsaw Puzzle: Democratic Committee Assignments in the Modern House; Models of Multiparty Electoral Competition; Making and Breaking Governments; and Analyzing Politics: Rationality, Behavior, and Institutions. He has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1990, and he is the recipient of fellowships by the Hoover Institution, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.

Stephen Ansolabehere is Professor of Government at Harvard University. He is the coauthor of The Media Game and Going Negative: How Political Advertising Alienates and Polarizes the American Electorate, which was awarded the Goldsmith Book Prize. His articles have appeared in The American Political Science Review, The Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and Public Opinion Quarterly. He has been awarded fellowships by the Carnegie Corporation Fellowship and the Hoover Institution. He served as a codirector of the CalTech/MIT Voting Project, established in the wake of the 2000 presidential election to evaluate the current state of the reliability and uniformity of U.S. voting systems and to propose uniform guidelines and requirements for reliable voting and performance.

If your expecting a book with many pictures, this is not the book for you. But it gives good details on changes since our country began. At the begining of each chapter is a time line on what the chapter is about. I would recommend this book.

With its large type, one-recipe-per-page design and complete but terse instructions, this book is as basic and simple as good bread. A boon to busy cooks, most of the breads can be ready for the oven in 10 to 15 minutes, even less if ingredients are assembled ahead of time. Early (author and cooking instructor) and Morris (The Different Bread Book explain the chemistry of quick breads and the role each ingredient plays in a bread's composition, allowing creative cooks to substitute and experiment with varieties of flours, sweeteners, liquids and fats. Most of the recipes are for dinner breads, but muffins, scones and crackers are included. There are several international breads (Finnish, Irish, Indian) and chapters on variations of basic white and whole-grain breads (coffee oat, potato rye and bran fig) nut and seed breads, chocolate and carob breads (with the cake-like cherry-chocolate bread), vegetable breads and a large collection of unusual fruit breads.
