Dark and Gritty S&M

Warning: this is not your momma's fluffy glitterkink. This is skirting the edge of dub-con S&M. There is no Happily Ever After. Both of the characters--Kurt and Luc--are a few floors short of a skyscraper. In fact, one might wonder just why these two men are even together sexually. And yet they are and each time the intensity gets ratcheted up even higher. They seem addicted to each other.

For a short story, Poison packs on hell of a wallop. I want to know more about Kurt and Luc and yet their brief interactions clued me in as to their fierce atraction. Kurt is that wonderfully mouthy submissive who needs to fight. Luc is the dominant who knows how to give it to him. And yes, it's just sex--sweaty, dirty, no-holds barred sex. And sometimes, that just hits the spot.

What a fantasy this presented! Although I am a straight woman, something about this "homo-erotica" just does it. Its so easy to get lost in these stories. I do wish they were longer, by the end I am begging for more. (Irony?) This is a must read!

Good Writing, But A Bit Much For My Taste

I picked up this short book and was warned of it's graphic content and the nature of the book from a sexual standpoint. Being opened minded I wanted to give it a chance. What I loved about the book was the writing. Jane Bled can write. She goes a great job creating tension between her characters and Kurt is overwhelmed by the mysterious individual he meets on a subway car. He's faced like all of us with doing things he probably shouldn't be doing, but the urge is so strong that it makes it nearly impossible to resist. I always look for believable characters when reading a book. Kurt and his love, or should I say lust interest are quite believable. The realism is there all the way and I'm sure the next book features the same quality writing.

If you're not comfortable with BDSM, and graphic erotica, this is probably not the book for you. I probably wont continue with the series because this isn't quite my taste. I'd recommend it for anyone who enjoys graphic erotica and BDSM; and is comfortable with their own sexuality. Poison is a quick read and can be read in 30 minutes to an hour, which is another plus of the book, as it doesn't drag on with a lot of useless description that has no purpose for the. The story is well thought out and the poems before each section kind of give you something to think about before you read on.

Osprey's done it agian!

'Bf-109 aces of the Russian Front' is a truly wonderful book! With 82 pages of wonderful drawings and photos and information. I especially loved it when I saw Erich Hartmann (with 352 kills) and Gerhard Barkhorn (301 kills) in the book. I thought the information on these aces was fantastic! The color plates are well drawn, always a plus when modeling, (I wish I had read this book before I built a Bf-109 in 1/32 scale and could have done Erich's plane).
To read about the German pilots rack up almost unheard of scores while battling the deadly Russians is incredible. (If you want to experience some action for yourself, buy IL-2 Sturmovik PC game).
This book is a must have for me and my collection of other Osprey and encyclopedia books. I'd give this book 6 stars, but that's not going to happen. This is only my opinion, but I think you'll really like this book after reading it.

short but sweet

Although a little expensive for a short book, it is well worth the price. This book isn't meant to be a definitive summary of the air war in Russia, but it is a wonderful introduction to WWII air combat on the eastern front. The book is packed with great photos (and descriptive captions), comprehensive ace statistics and beautiful illustrations of their actual planes. It is very balanced between giving an overall summary of the eastern front war and providing actual accounts of real German pilots. Naturally it is centered around the Bf-109 but it doesn't read like a list of statistics; it is well-written enough to read all the way through, captions and all. This is a perfect supplement for anyone interested the Luftwaffe, the Soviet-German war, or especially the Messerschmitt Bf-109. Everyone will learn something from this book.

Detailed, accurate and fast paced

This book is a wonderful account of the Luftwaffe fighter units in the Eastern Front, presenting all the leading personalities, the aces and a wealth of statistics and little known facts. The color profiles are top quality and with the exception of a few minor mistakes (like the date of Gunther Rall's return to the front in August 1942, or his total Eastern score when he left for JG11) the text is very accurate, fascinating and extremely useful as a reference. To the readers that are enthralled by this book and the unbielievable achievements of the Jagdwaffe in the East, I would recommend also Werner Held's excellent pictorial book "The German Fighter Units over Russia" as the perfect companion to Weal's work.

Chinese vs Japanese

A number of reviews and comments here are from people looking for an abacus to teach their kids arithmetic ( an excellent idea BTW). So I thought I would explain the difference between the various kinds of abacus and their merits. I haven't bought this book but I am an avid abacus user and I thought these comments might help.

There are three main types of abacus, the Japanese Soroban, the Chinese Suan Pan and the 10 bead Western abacus often seen as the Russian Schotty.

The Japanese Soroban with 1 top bead & 4 lower beads (1/4 configuration) is the most sophisticated device for base 10 arithmetic. If this is what you want to do or if you want to teach your child, this is the best choice IMO. Older Soroban have 5 lower beads. The extra bead is unnecessary but it has some advantages, one being that you can actually see the carry bead when doing a multi column carry or borrow e.g 999 +1. With 4 lower beads, the carry bead is implicit until you get to the last column. This is helpful when beginning but after a while one outgrows the need for this. I recommend one of the cheap plastic ones with different colors for each row which are available on ebay for less than $10.

The Chinese Suan Pan is the most complex and perhaps the most powerful design. Its 2/5 configuration is designed to be able to handle hexadecimal arithmetic (base 16). It can handle base 10 just fine but the extra beads are confusing and although the advanced user will find ways to use them in base 10 calculation, they would not help a child grasp basic concepts.

Both the Soroban and the Suan Pan depend heavily on complement arithmetic, a very efficient and easy way to add or subtract with a carry. It's an extension of the trick you probably use to add a 9 - subtract 1 and add ten. If you don't know this technique for other numbers, you will need to invest a bit of time to learn it but it's quite easy. If, as one reviewer has stated, this book does not explain complement arithmetic, this is a serious shortcoming.

The 10 bead abacus is the easiest to understand and a very capable device. It would serve as a good introduction to numbers and the basic concepts of addition and subtraction. They are available as children's toys and I bought one for my grandson. However, once these concepts are understood, complement arithmetic on a soroban is the way to go.

If you are interested in the abacus in general, then you can't skip over the Suan Pan, not only is it widely used in Asia, but it is the ancestor of the Soroban. Also it is capable of tricks and techniques that are not available on the Soroban. It is also quite beautiful.

Finally, I highly recommend Finger Math by Lieberthal which shows how to do Soroban techniques on the fingers of one's hands. As a way of making numbers and arithemtic tangible, this can't be beat. This book gives step by step, methodical training and is written for teaching young children.

Worthless, completely flat with no real abacus theory

I've given this book a thorough run-through now and the conclusion I've come to is that it teaches absolutely nothing worthwhile.

The entire explanation of how to use an Abacus is completely obvious and lacking any method. For example, in addition there is an example of adding 6421 + 425. When adding 400 to 6421, it says in column 3 (4 + 4): "Upper deck, register1 bead to add 500; lower deck, unregister 1 bead to minus 100." Obvious.

The proper way to perform 4 + 4 on an abacus is to consider the complement of 4 with regards to 5. The complements with regard to 5 are (4 & 1) and (3 & 2). Since we cannot add 4 more beads to the lower register, we set the 5 bead on the upper register and subtract the compliment of 4, which is 1. The book doesn't touch the concept of complementary numbers on 10 or 5.

The difference is subtle. The explanation that you add 5 and then subtract 1 (as 5 - 1 = 4) to add 4 is correct; however, it requires mental calculations. The explanation of complementary numbers on 5 (4 & 1) and (3 & 2) and complementary numbers on 10 (9 & 1) (8 & 2) (7 & 3) (6 & 4) (5 & 5) makes much abacus work mechanical. It's the same difference as teaching someone to compute (97 - 105) via the borrowing method rather than telling them to instead compute (105 - 97) and make the result negative.

Sections on Multiplication and such necessarily require more solid theory.

This is a great book on a hard to find subject. Gives clear step-by-step instructions as well as practise problems and history. If you want to learn the abacus, this book is all you'll need
