YA The play opens with Frankie on the phone with his brother Jake, who claims to have killed his wife, Beth. Next, the lights come up on a hospital room where Beth lies, bandaged, aphasic, and confused. Alternating the action between platforms on either side of the stage where Beth's and Jake's families live, Shepard exposes the secrets of sordid pasts of insanity, alcoholism, and alienation. High-school theater students should find a number of short scenes suitable for two-person dialogues. Props and costumes would not be needed for classroom readings. A short radio monologue by Shepard and Joseph Chaikin, The War in Heaven, is included in the last 19 pages of the book. Music notes, a set description, and stage directions accompany the dialogue. I love this play! Sam Shepard is a brilliant playwright and has done it once again.

Lie of the Mind is relatable with a beautiful storyline and solid characters.

His Most Popular Play Among Playwrights

In almost every playwriting class I have taken the teacher has asked the participants to go around the room and discuss their favorite plays. A Lie of the Mind is always everyone's favorite Shepard play. I have curiously never heard playwrights mention Fool for Love, Buried Child, or Curse of the Starving Class which are much more popular with actors and directors (and the Pulitzer Committee). True West is sometimes a favorite for its tight X-shaped structure. But, A Lie of the Mind has a gorgeous ensemble feel, interwining the lives of two troubled families into an alcoholic and violent aria of tortured love. I have seen it performed twice and seen actors work on each individual scene as class work so it haunts me a lot and never fails to astonish. The play has a heartbeat and sweet warm flesh. It also has one of the most dramatic and involving beginning scenes ever penned. A must read for playwrights interested in writing ensemble pieces.

An accurate portrayal of imperfect human nature.

This wonderful drama is a great example of the imperfect quality of human nature. Even the characters that seem to be the most put together have their own weaknesses and foibles. Shepard has done a very good job of constructing the scenes in a logical manner, appropriately switching between the homes of two different, yet strongly connected families. One of the crowning achievements of this drama is that it draws you in and makes you feel for the characters of the two midwestern families, especially Beth, the now-mentally damaged wife of Jake. I have not seen this play performed but if the written play can draw you the reader in so deeply, I can only imagine what the performed piece can do to the audience. I highly reccomend this drama to anyone who loves to read well-written plays.

beautiful--unique perspective on other cultures/people/places

I love the format of this book. Rather than being structured around regions of the world (like most), it is formatted around basic human needs--clean water, healthy food, safe home, education, protection, love, an identity, freedom of religion and expression, etc... In the course of that, specific children from various countries are profiled throughout, with a focus on how that particular need is being met in their own life. The book is visually appealing, with a very reader-friendly lay out--well organized, colorful, and packed with beautiful photos. This book is perfect for kids and adults alike. It also handles tough issues such as exploitation of children through work and war sensitively, yet clearly. I bought this book to use in teaching a geography/world cultures class, along with several others, and this one really stands out!

About the Author
Gary Calderone is one of the original graduates from The Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado, studying under Rachel Segal, Amy Alpers, Steve Giordano, and Romana Kryzanowska (disciple of Joseph Pilates). Gary apprenticed for 18 months with Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle, creator of the Core Connections Pilates 3-dimensional Body Mapping Paradigm, and Program Director of the Core Connections at The Pilates Center of Austin (PCA). Both Boulder and Austin Teacher Training Programs are considered among the most rigorous and comprehensive in the country. As the founding director of the Pilates Center of Fort Collins, Colorado, Gary brought the classical teaching to the attention of the medical community, working and collaboration with MDs, NDs, PTs, D.C.s, CMTs, NMTs, Rolfers and acupuncturists illuminated the healing potential of the work - particularly around chronic and acute patient populations. Pilates Deep Dive

Don't pick this book up if you're looking for an exercise manual or a dancer's body in 30 days. If however, you want to do a deep dive into the apologetics of Pilates, this book will hit the spot! This book was just what I was looking for with respect to going deeper in my own Pilates practice. The last thing I wanted to read was another collection of Pilates movements or even worse another trendy Pilates "fusion" program. I was looking for a holistic perspective on classical Pilates as a life practice... not just a workout. Gary has hit the nail on the head for me in that respect. As a serious Pilates enthusiast, it has been difficult for me to articulate the WHY of Pilates in a comprehensive way. Even J. Pilates' own books are less compelling than Gary's (in my opinion) when it comes to explaining WHY we love and choose to practice Pilates. I love that he not only put together this wonderful resource clearly from his own experience and love of the practice, but that he had the input and editorial consent of recognized Pilates experts and elders. I think it's so important that serious Pilates practitioners (enthusiasts and professionals) be able to evangelize Pilates in the way that Joseph Pilates intended... not as an exercise program but as a "Whole Health" approach. Don't know how it could be better for me, but I'd love to see a second edition. Totally loved this book.

Karen Horney meets realistic fiction

Readers of Thackeray, Stendhal, George Eliot, Dostoevsky, and Conrad will find this book to be an excellent introduction to the ideas of Karen Horney, a post-Freudian psychoanalyst whose theory of personality structure lends itself well to studies of authors of realistic fiction and their characters. Karen Horney's theory of the neurotic personality, which today would be called an Axis-II personality disorder, has the virtue of being synchronic. This means that she describes the personality in terms of its present-day structure and forces without relying on any knowledge about the origins of these dysfunctions. In this book, Bernard Paris analyzes the main characters as well as the "implied authors" of several well-known works of fiction. His argument is that authors who create sufficiently realistic characters cannot help but endow them with personality structures amenable to a Horneyan analysis. The discussions of Vanity Fair (Barnes & Noble Classics) and Notes from the Underground are particularly fascinating.

Those who have read Horney's books (for example, Our Inner Conflicts: A Constructive Theory of Neurosis) will definitely want to read this book. It will enrich your understanding of her theory and make you eager to read the books discussed.

This book fails in some pretty key areas of teaching Applescript. Especially in explaining a lot of the unique syntax issues with Applescript. After reading this book my scripts were sound but 99% of my errors were based on my incorrect use of syntax. It was VERY frustrating. I finally had to grab some other books that clarified to me what this book should have explained.

In addition, the biggest flaw is that the code written in this book is not available to download (or included on a CD). I had to go in and retype all of the examples in the book. The website claims you can download the code but it's not available and the publisher couldn't find it on the link either.

I'd say you would be well advised to pick up a different applescript book.

Writings of Orestes Brownson and Father Feeney

In this book written by Thomas Mary Sennott, we have compiled for us the writings of two great theologians that spent their life defending Catholic doctrine. They are Orestes Brownson and Father Feeney. And we can read their positions in their own words. These two men lived over a centaury apart in the U.S.A. and had a similarity of thought. They exposed how some were willing to compromise on doctrine for the sake of political correctness. And this point is shown to us in the attempted repudiation, even going on to this day, of the axiom extra ecclesiam nulla salus, and a minimization of devotion to Our Lady as the Mediatrix of All Graces. You will see that this is not a new defense that was required becasue of the last Vatican Council. This is a very interesting read.
