I'm sorry but this was awful. Horrible story structure and it was just all over the place.

I read a couple reviews that said this book was amazing so I was really expecting something good. This was one of the worst books I've read. It was just all over the place. Sentences weren't constructed properly and it was just a terrible book. I can't even name what it was but it was just awful.

Read This Book In One Day!

Lily's bestfriend Andy is such a d*ck & is so not a good bestfriend at all or even a friend right now!(reviewing as I read). Lily's dad is such a poor excuse for a man and father right now! OMG! Gabe is like so freaking yummy! He is such a sweetheart, understanding, & such a great pillar of support for Lily throughout this book. Andy smh he's acting so freaking juvenile asking Lily to make a decision. OMG! Lily's mother was such a freaking bad mother like she started off good but then ended up just being miserable, selfish, and horrible mother! Now Lily she is such a strong 17 yr old to deal with the things she had to. Like she had selfish parents who takes the meaning of selfish to a whole "nother" level that selfish is no longer the word anymore! OMG! My heart went out to this poor girl and that means the author did their job. This book was a good book to me but the whole seesaw stuff with Lily and Gabe's relationship became annoying.

But overall I enjoyed the book and I will admit I became teary eyed when the big tear jerker point happen in the book. I totally didn't see that happening and I was shocked and was like "Ah man!" when it did happen. There were some editing issues but nothing to major to take away from the book at all. The storyline was there, the character development was there, and of course the connection of reader to characters was there. In my opinion I say get this book because it was so worth the money and the time also it's just a ONE book storyline! It's so refreshing to read a book where the ending is THE END and isn't drawn out into 2 or 3 books! The ending was a good one and you aren't left wondering what happen and I loved it! So in my opinion I say get this book I really enjoyed it and I believe you will too! Hope this review is able to aid you with your final decision to get the book or not.

I have to say I really enjoyed this novel By My Side by Stephanie Witter, the writing was great, the story flowed well and I enjoyed all the characters. Like most romance novels, boy meets girl, they have some issues then they get there happy every after. This story felt different to me. I really enjoyed how the story was based on what was going on in their lives and not entirely around the romance. I mean it is a romance novel none the less but I enjoyed the story quite a bit. I would also like to mention that Stephanie Witter writing is very good her writing was easy to read, and her words at times made me feel real emotions for the characters in this story. This is a story of love, loss, heartache and life feeling out of control.

Lily Saunders life is falling apart, her best friend Andy is acting weird, his older brother Gabe is home who Lily doesn't get along with and her family life has fallen apart. When Lily needs her best friend for support he isn't there for her. Gabe steps up and tries to help Lily anyway he can. Gabe has been away at school and Lily can see clearly that he is different, quiet and seems more mature. In the past Gabe and Lily have always argued and for some reason they just don't get along. But Gabe listens and Lily finds she can tell him anything; they share with each other their sorrows and a real relationship is formed between them. It funny to see how similar they are and how much they paid attention to each other growing up, even if it was yelling at each other.

Lily's mother, father and best friend have deserted Lily and she has no one but Gabe. This story is heartbreaking at times and I loved Lily's character, strength and I felt so bad for her being so alone at a young age. But Gabe does step up most of the times and it fantastic reading. I have rated By My Side a 4.5 star rating and I really suggest anyone who reads this and enjoys YA Romance to pick this book up you will not be disappointed.

Excellent book for people who need an overall introduction to the various needlework techniques, with an easy to follow stitch guide.

Many editing and instructional mistakes!

I purchased this book several months ago, and have been very excited about trying out some of the projects outlined in the text. While the book has many beautiful ideas, the instructions provided to accompany the projects are very flawed. I have tried to complete three of the projects thus far,and every set of instructions has been full of mistakes. The text often inverts the color of threads to be used, leading the embroiderer to stitch in the wrong colors, or uses a different colored thread in the illustration than is indicated in the directions. Also, the instructions often tell you to buy certain colors in DMC floss, when those colors are only made by Anchor, etc. The projects are lovely, but the embroiderer must pay careful attention to the directions and often self-correct during the stitching process to complete the piece. Additionally, the binding is very poor in this book. After only a few uses, the pages began falling out. I had to disbind the book and place the pages in a three-ring binder to keep them together.

I agree with the comments of Linda Lahse Lange that this is a superb book. I have never done work like the book shows; however, this book inspires me to want to learn how, especially attending a school like the Royal School of Needlework. I will be a beginner as to the techniques in this book, however, I know I can grasp them. I love art, especially elegant, creative art. This book portrays serious needlework. HURRAH FOR THIS BOOK!!!!!Royal School of Needlework Embroidery Techniques

The celebrated bullfighter whose fame is the theme of "Viva Mi Fama" steps from the present into a past immortalized by Goya's portrait of the matador Pedro Romero; and the architects who are the "Reasonable People" of that story find themselves drawn into the irrational mysteries not only of religious fervor but of their famous mentor's identity--they discover "there are no empty houses," only a present fraught with the past.

The title story here is narrated by an elderly American doctor who, while bemoaning his own mortality, learns in a Poe-like twist that he has been married to the ghost of a Russian emigre who died in the Spanish Civil War 49 years earlier. "La Desdichada" tells of two student roommates who half-jokingly "adopt" a lifelike store mannequin. As both become sexually involved with the mannequin, their true natures are revealed. "The Prisoner of Las Lomas" is a mischievous tale about a wealthy man imprisoned by his servants in his mansion, a state he soon comes to enjoy. "Viva Mi Fama," the collection's most powerful story, contrasts the creative power of an aging Goya with the vitality of two of his models, an actress and a bullfighter, asking: Which is more real, the subject of a work of art or the work of art itself? "Reasonable People" again explores the theme of the doppleganger, focusing on twin architects, one of whom is seduced by a rather perverse reincarnation of the Virgin Mary. Fuentes's rich interior vision and lyrical controlled prose have been beautifully captured by the translator.

Intelligent and Riveting

This collection of novels is a beautiful and intellgently written volume, one that is an interesting read. If one wants comparisons, it could be compared to Garcia Marquez's style--very dense, very descriptive, very mysterious. There are copies of it available used... Buy it!

Five short stories

Fuentes revels in language and creating imagery that astounds, intrigues and leaves the reader in a land of limbo that is both magical and real. In this seemingly different collection of short stories or novellas the masterful literary pupeteer Fuentes draws the reader into his web of stories that covers centuries of history over various continents. Whether the stories take place in Spain, the United States or Eastern Europe the end result is a timeless portrait with universal themes with evocative resonance. The five stories in this collection have recurrent themes as in the clever classic novel by Fuentes entitled "Christoper Unborn," which is also highly recomended. Of particualar interest in the collection of novellas is "La Desdichada" where two students steal a manequin and fall in love. The storyline borders on the absurd but in reality it is a poets vechicle of expression for love. After all a woman of wood will be faithful to a man but will a man of flesh and blood prove he is worthy of fidelity ? All of the stories are excellent but of particular note was one I found very interesting entitled "Viva Mi Fama." This is a story that leaps from the present to the past by way of a Goya painting of a matador of fame by the name of Pepe Romero. The journey through Andalusia finds the reader tranported to Goya's Spain traversing the countryside from Bordeaux to Madrid and all lands in between. IMO there is no better story teller in Latin America and surely none as prolific as Carlos Fuentes. This is a beautiful collection of stories that are especially good for the person who is new to the visual , visceral and sometimes erotic literature of Fuentes. Great stuff for new and old readers of the magical world of Carlos Fuentes, one of the preeminent man of letters in Latin America.

About the Author
Michael A. Seeds has been Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Franklin and Marshall (F&M) College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, since 1970. In 1989, he received F&M College's Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. Seeds' love for the history of astronomy led him to create upper-level courses on Archaeoastronomy and Changing Concepts of the Universe. His research interests focus on variable stars and the automation of astronomical telescopes. Mike is coauthor with Dana Backman and Michele Montgomery of HORIZONS HYBRID: EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE, Thirteenth Edition, and UNIVERSE HYBRID: SOLAR SYSTEM, STARS AND GALAXIES, Eighth Edition, both published by Cengage Learning. He was Senior Consultant in the creation of the twenty-six-episode telecourse accompanying the book HORIZONS: EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE, Twelfth Edition.

Dana Backman works for the SETI Institute of Mountain View, California, as director of outreach for the SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) mission at NASA's Ames Research Center. He also teaches introductory astronomy, astrobiology, and cosmology courses in Stanford University's Continuing Studies Program. From 1991 to 2003, he taught in the physics and astronomy department at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he invented and taught a Life in the Universe course in the interdisciplinary Foundations program. Dr. Backman's research interests focus on infrared observations of planet formation, models of debris disks around nearby stars, and evolution of the solar system's Kuiper Belt. With Mike Seeds, he also coauthored HORIZONS: EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE, Twelfth Edition (2012); UNIVERSE: SOLAR SYSTEMS, STARS, AND GALAXIES, Seventh Edition (2012); and FOUNDATIONS OF ASTRONOMY (2013), all published by Cengage Learning. Dr. Backman earned his bachelor's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his doctorate from the University of Hawai'i.

Good introductory book, but not worth the cost

This book was a required textbook for my college course. It provided a nice overview of what GIS is and how it can be used. It explored many different techniques for analysis, data models, data acquisition, data exploration, and more. It went over these concepts fairly generally, sometimes not describing in detail the specifics of each subtopic it introduces. It is a very modern book with references to new technologies and studies.

Note that the book is NOT for just ArcGIS. It is careful to describe GIS in general and does not focus solely on ArcGIS, though there are exercises at the end of each chapter (with data from the CD) that do apply to ArcGIS.

Overall, I would say this is a good book for an introductory course, but it is very much overpriced! It may be ~400 pages long, but the pages are small. I would not buy this book if it was not a required textbook. Similar books, though they may less current, can easily be found in a library for free!

Get this book for the exercises - and check the required version before buying!

This was a required text for a GIS class. The exercises at the end of each chapter were the best part of the text. Since the exercises change with each new version of ARC GIS, you need the most recent version of the book (unless a kind classmate will allow you to scan the problem sets and share the data.) The text is OK but pretty dense, and in my opinion, Chang doesn't explain concepts very well. Those not familiar with ARCGIS would find doing the problems difficult without some other help - our professor demonstrated a version of the problem sets during each class before letting us loose on the assignments. Our assignments were all based on the exercises in this book and some supplemental exercises. I will probably keep the exercise data so that I can try to redo them if I forget how to use some of the ARCGIS features in the future, although the usefulness will be limited by continued changes to ARCGIS.

Lots of the exercises are based on Idaho - a way to bring more exposure to a less populated state!
