The Waiting Room, by Lisa Loomer

A dark comedy about the timeless quest for beauty-and its cost. Three women from different centuries meet in a modern doctor's waiting room. Forgiveness From Heaven is an eighteenth-century Chinese woman whose bound feet are causing her to lose her toes. Victoria is a nineteenth-century tightly corsetted English woman suffering from what is commonly known as "hysteria." Then there is Wanda, a modern gal from New Jersey who is having problems with her silicone breasts. Husbands, doctors, Freud, the drug industry and the FDA all come under examination. The play is a wild ride through medical and sexual politics, including the politics of the ever-present battle with breast cancer.

The Binding and Releasing of Women
By Jedidiah Carosaari
I was emotionally exhausted after reading this play. This is not an easy play to read, or observe. This is edgy, hard, and Truth. How do our societies manage to destroy women, as they search for beauty? This is the finest play I have ever read on the oppression women face.

Lisa Loomer places a 18th century Chinese woman, a 19th century British woman, and a 20th century American woman all in the same waiting room. The Chinese woman is there because her feet are rotting off because of binding. The British woman is there to have her ovaries removed because she suffers from hysteria, which is obvious because she wants to read and study Greek. Oh, and her corset is destroying her stomach, liver, and kidneys. The American woman is there because her silicon breast implants have leaked, causing breast cancer. All three of them think what they are doing is completely reasonable. All three think what the other two is doing is completely horrific. So we get the insider's and outsider's perspectives simultaneously within the same characters. The British woman and Chinese woman who have husbands who think their wives are very wonderful and beautiful and are completely in love with them. The American woman has no one- something telling about her culture. Underneath is a subplot of how the modern medical community searches for money, rather than cures- and the very nature of the system is designed to remove the most promising cures.

The one detraction from the play is that the sexual scenes are quite graphic. I had wanted to perform this in my high-school drama class, but found I can't because of gratuitous sex. Frankly, artistically the play would have been better if it had discussed the sexuality and merely alluded to the sex, leaving it to the imagination rather than playing it out front.

The play is full of humor, and provides great opportunities for actors. A number of parts are designed to be played by the same character, showing us how we are similar and dissimilar in different cultures in different eras. But everywhere, in every culture, we find a way to oppress women, and to encourage them to oppress themselves: to destroy their bodies, and to participate in that destruction, in order to maintain the male standard of beauty and the ideal feminine. There is plenty of humor in the play, both dark and light. You can not help but feel the disgust as you realize that, yes, in our culture too, we divide the woman into body and spirit, treat her as an object, change her into something she was not, destroy her body, cause in her sickness, disease, and death, so we can see the ideal of our minds expressed in front of us. For this reward, we lose the real woman that was present. It's the sin nature, going a long way back.

And there are moments of hope and emancipation, which will bring you close to tears. Find a way to either watch, or read, this play.

The Waiting Room
By Ashley
Full of love, despair, and reality, The Waiting Room is a spectacular show that is sure to change anyone's life. We had recently performed this show at my high school, and of course, we were nervous at what type of reaction we might get from the audience. It is a very mature play filled with topics everyone in our current society is much too wary to talk about. For instance, sex, cancer, and medical politics.

The Waiting Room begins upbeat, funny, and intriguing. There is so much laughter and so many catchy lines in the show it's sure to bring you to stitches with its absurdity.

But, just performing this show brought the entire cast to tears. And when we finally presented it to our audience, they came out crying, bawling, incredibly moved. It is too sad, but too wonderful a play to pass up. Lisa Loomer did an amazing job writing a play about how women have suffered and how we should try to change it.

I have searched for another production that would be in my area of DC/Baltimore - I want to share it again and again. I'll buy the paperback and hope I can interest my friends in reading aloud. Should be interesting.

Power consumption becomes the most important design goal in a wide range of electronic systems. There are two driving forces towards this trend: continuing device scaling and ever increasing demand of higher computing power. First, device scaling continues to satisfy Moore’s law via a conventional way of scaling (More Moore) and a new way of exploiting the vertical integration (More than Moore). Second, mobile and IT convergence requires more computing power on the silicon chip than ever. Cell phones are now evolving towards mobile PC. PCs and data centers are becoming commodities in house and a must in industry. Both supply enabled by device scaling and demand triggered by the convergence trend realize more computation on chip (via multi-core, integration of diverse functionalities on mobile SoCs, etc.) and finally more power consumption incurring power-related issues and constraints.

Energy-Aware System Design: Algorithms and Architectures provides state-of-the-art ideas for low power design methods from circuit, architecture to software level andoffers design case studies in three fast growing areas of mobile storage, biomedical and security.

Important topics and features:

- Describes very recent advanced issues and methods for energy-aware design at each design level from circuit andarchitecture toalgorithm level, and also covering important blocks including low power main memory subsystem and on-chip network at architecture level

- Explains efficient power conversion and delivery which is becoming important as heterogeneous power sources are adopted for digital and non-digital parts

- Investigates 3D die stacking emphasizing temperature awareness for better perspective on energy efficiency

- Presents three practical energy-aware design case studies; novel storage device (e.g., solid state disk), biomedical electronics (e.g., cochlear and retina implants), and wireless surveillance camera systems.

Researchers and engineers in the field of hardware and software design will find this book an excellent starting point to catch up with the state-of-the-art ideas of low power design.

Shantaram: A Novel, by Gregory David Roberts

"It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured."

So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.

Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay's hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere.

As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.

Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas---this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart. Based on the life of the author, it is by any measure the debut of an extraordinary voice in literature.

Amazon.com Review
Crime and punishment, passion and loyalty, betrayal and redemption are only a few of the ingredients in Shantaram, a massive, over-the-top, mostly autobiographical novel. Shantaram is the name given Mr. Lindsay, or Linbaba, the larger-than-life hero. It means "man of God's peace," which is what the Indian people know of Lin. What they do not know is that prior to his arrival in Bombay he escaped from an Australian prison where he had begun serving a 19-year sentence. He served two years and leaped over the wall. He was imprisoned for a string of armed robberies peformed to support his heroin addiction, which started when his marriage fell apart and he lost custody of his daughter. All of that is enough for several lifetimes, but for Greg Roberts, that's only the beginning.

He arrives in Bombay with little money, an assumed name, false papers, an untellable past, and no plans for the future. Fortunately, he meets Prabaker right away, a sweet, smiling man who is a street guide. He takes to Lin immediately, eventually introducing him to his home village, where they end up living for six months. When they return to Bombay, they take up residence in a sprawling illegal slum of 25,000 people and Linbaba becomes the resident "doctor." With a prison knowledge of first aid and whatever medicines he can cadge from doing trades with the local Mafia, he sets up a practice and is regarded as heaven-sent by these poor people who have nothing but illness, rat bites, dysentery, and anemia. He also meets Karla, an enigmatic Swiss-American woman, with whom he falls in love. Theirs is a complicated relationship, and Karla’s connections are murky from the outset.

Roberts is not reluctant to wax poetic; in fact, some of his prose is downright embarrassing. Throughought the novel, however, all 944 pages of it, every single sentence rings true. He is a tough guy with a tender heart, one capable of what is judged criminal behavior, but a basically decent, intelligent man who would never intentionally hurt anyone, especially anyone he knew. He is a magnet for trouble, a soldier of fortune, a picaresque hero: the rascal who lives by his wits in a corrupt society. His story is irresistible. Stay tuned for the prequel and the sequel. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of this massive, thrillingly undomesticated potboiler, a young Australian man bearing a false New Zealand passport that gives his name as "Lindsay" flies to Bombay some time in the early '80s. On his first day there, Lindsay meets the two people who will largely influence his fate in the city. One is a young tour guide, Prabaker, whose gifts include a large smile and an unstoppably joyful heart. Through Prabaker, Lindsay learns Marathi (a language not often spoken by gora, or foreigners), gets to know village India and settles, for a time, in a vast shantytown, operating an illicit free clinic. The second person he meets is Karla, a beautiful Swiss-American woman with sea-green eyes and a circle of expatriate friends. Lin's love for Karla—and her mysterious inability to love in return—gives the book its central tension. "Linbaba's" life in the slum abruptly ends when he is arrested without charge and thrown into the hell of Arthur Road Prison. Upon his release, he moves from the slum and begins laundering money and forging passports for one of the heads of the Bombay mafia, guru/sage Abdel Khader Khan. Eventually, he follows Khader as an improbable guerrilla in the war against the Russians in Afghanistan. There he learns about Karla's connection to Khader and discovers who set him up for arrest. Roberts, who wrote the first drafts of the novel in prison, has poured everything he knows into this book and it shows. It has a heartfelt, cinemascope feel. If there are occasional passages that would make the very angels of purple prose weep, there are also images, plots, characters, philosophical dialogues and mysteries that more than compensate for the novel's flaws. A sensational read, it might well reproduce its bestselling success in Australia here.

From Booklist
A thousand pages is like a thousand pounds--it sounds like too much to deal with. Nevertheless, Roberts' very long novel sails along at an amazingly fast clip. Readers in the author's native Australia apparently finished every page of it, for they handed it considerable praise. Now U.S. readers can enjoy this rich saga based on Roberts' own life: escape from a prison in Australia and a subsequent flight to Bombay, which is exactly what happens to Lindsay, the main character in the novel; once in Bombay, he joins the city's underground. Roberts graphically, even beautifully, evokes that milieu--he is as effective at imparting impressions as any good travel writer--in this complex but cohesive story about freedom and the lack of it, about survival, spiritual meaning, love, and sex; in other words, about life in what has to be one of the most fascinating cities in the world. One's first impression of this novel is that it is simply a good story, but one soon comes to realize that Roberts is also a gifted creator of characters--not only Lindsay but also Prabaker, who becomes Lindsay's guide, caretaker, and entree into various elements of Bombay society. Soon, too, one becomes aware and appreciative of Roberts' felicitous writing style. In all, despite the novel's length, it is difficult not to be ensnared by it. And, be forewarned, it will be popular. Brad Hooper

The Best Novel of the 21st Century...so far
By Daniel Myers
FINALLY, a gut-wrenching, harrowing, well-penned novel, whose author suffers not from the literary constipation of most current "highbrow" authors (He's faced down far more deadly things, chronicled herein, to be affrighted by sharp penned editors.) - A book, in short, that will make your heart bleed with the depths to which the human soul can sink and the glories to which it can rise. ----I read so many books, but this is the first true work of art and genius published in this new century that I've managed to discover. It is a book from which I'm still recovering from having read. Like all great art, it leaves one with a new perspective on the world and causes one to reconnoitre the heart's bearings. The book strips away the lies we tell ourselves and leaves the heartstrings bare for the reader to see, where he/ she will recognise his/her own.

Let's get something straight here: This is not a book of "purple prose" or any form of sentimentality. Each tear shed is wrung from harrowing experience. As Roberts writes, "One of the reasons we crave love, and seek it so desperately, is that love is the only cure for loneliness, and shame, and sorrow. But some feelings sink so deep into the heart that only loneliness can help you find them again. Some truths about yourself are so painful that only shame can help you live with them. And some things are just so sad that only your soul can do the crying for you."--Your soul will have cried with Roberts's many times before the end of the book.

This is truly a book for lovers of great literature. Roberts writes, "I never found a club or a clan or idea that was more important to me than the men and women who believed in it."--This book is one that values the mystery of people and the mystery of human existence above all else. ----Including yours, reader.

Nice prose style but no editor
By Big Apple
Interesting real story (if it is, indeed, real, the historical basis seems to be a bit vague, my guess is that most of it is made up) and clearly the man can write prose, but the book is too long and it is over-rated. The first third is a series of never ending conversations in a Bombay restaurant in which we are introduced to a plethora of characters. It's a slow, very static start and there are way too many names to remember. Then the second third is great. This is where the story lies. The part where he goes to the slum to be a doctor, gets thrown in prison, and gets out. The rest is beautifully written but boring. I'm not surprised the sequel isn't really selling nor that the movie has taken so long to appear. The last third of this book is a HUGE let down. It is slow and unbelievable. For some reason the author has tagged a war story onto what is already a hybrid of genres - prison escape and love story. It just feels too much. The writer heroin addict can learn languages and now he is Rambo? He seems to train forever too. Several years if you add up all the 'And we practised this for three months...' In general, the narrative is at times too ponderous, which is frustrating because at heart this is an action story, a book for guys not gals, and not quite the literary masterpiece it thinks it is. The philosophy conversations between the protagonist and Khader, for example, don't work and are a bit silly. A mafia don espousing on the meaning of life might be a good idea for a character but the realization is cornball. The conversations are too basic, too high school-ish. The 'love story' if you can call it that is poorly delineated. It's the classic case of show don't tell only this author tells and doesn't show. Protagonist Lin TELLS us repeatedly how beautiful she is, how much he loves her, but we are never SHOWN why. We are not convinced the obviously conniving woman is worthy of so much attention and it makes for a sappy hero. It's also a big disappointment that a story about a man who escaped from a maximum security prison devotes so little space to the escape. Two hundred pages of chit chat with characters you'll never remember to open with and then just a few pages on the escape. There's a novel in this beautiful sprawling mess somewhere but truly it needs an editor. Clearly whoever published this and edited it was too in love with the material. Sorry, it's not Melville.

Outstanding, heads and tails above the run of the mill book!
By Kip Derringer
The books plot, twists, and pace would make a great book in itself but it would have to be shorter. It is over 900 pages. What caught me is without trying to shove it down your throat is the Author's love of people. Good, bad, ugly, beautiful, extremely poor, extremely rich, strange, and even straight out hell types of people. The author and main character who who portrays himself as no pillar of society seems to have an intense love of humans and human nature. Not only are the characters and what they do complex but no matter how deep or shallow they are in crime ranging from petty scammers to murderers and even torturers, in by far most cases he pulls the good out of them and demonstrates that even though people get themselves in these situations regularly, that we consider heinous crimes, there is actually good in them that may be hidden deep but is in every human being.

It not only did its job of entertaining, but got me to thinking philosophically about people when I was not reading it. Anybody that knows me would not consider me a philosophical thinker. That is why I rated the mood as thoughtful though it works up to to being every bit as much suspenseful. It is an incredible book that starts out interesting and moved on to the point where if I could manage to put it down by midnight I couldn't wait to get myself back to reading it. I read the book twice. After the first time I went to Southeast Asia, not including India which is the setting of the book, but once to Thailand and twice to Nepal. I really enjoyed the people and some of them could make me laugh harder than I ever have in my life. But they were always trying to pull petty scams. Then when I got back from my third trip I read Shantaram the second time and it put things into perspective. They assume we are all rich while the poorest of them live in plywood and cardboard houses with plastic scraps held down by rocks for a roof. So what is it for the Americans who likely paid over 2K Just to get there and back to get suckered in a petty scam. I thought about my loss of $60.00 to a scam and it seemed more ignorance on my part than a crime on their part and just learned to be more prepared and knowledgeable the next time I bought something. I really liked them other than having to be wary of the scam at any time. But that was all part of the some of the best experiences i had in my life. In addition when I saw how many people were poor and how they lived, I just considered it a donation to charity that can't be written off. Big Deal. Those were the best experiences I ever had.

Human Rights: An Introduction, by Darren J. O'Byrne

Human Rights: An Introduction is an important text that provides a comprehensive overview of human rights and related issues from a social science perspective.

First, this book does more than discuss theory, it uses case studies and personal testimonies in the debate. Human rights as an area of academic interest cannot be easily divorced from human rights struggles and the reality of contemporary conditions.

Second, the book is aimed at what is an emerging and growing cross-disciplinary field of study. Human rights issues are increasingly coming to the fore in a number of academic debates. Whereas the study of human rights has traditionally been included in departments of law, international relations and philosophy, a number of courses are now being set up in departments of sociology and anthropology. Consequently, there is an increasing need to bring these disparate approaches together.

This student text emphasizes nutrition and the use of energy systems during training. A new chapter has been added for this edition on clinical exercise physiology for cardiovascular and pulmonary resuscitation, and there are "Focus on Research" sections with synopses of actual published experiments and studies in the field - these seek to demonstrate the principles of the text in the context of real-world clinical physiology, nutrition and exercise science. There is also an accompanying Class Preparation Guide, which challenges students and provides a reinforcement of information in the text. A new appendix has been added, on the 1995 ACSM Position Stamps.

Knowhow behind fitness
By Per Kistler
This book is a great help in understanding what is happening within the body conerning sports training and nutrition. It is based on uncountable research studies and presented in a very readable form with ample graphics illustrations. The book helped me not only to understand more, but also to improve fitness and even loose some weight. It goes very far beyond compared to what one gets told in fitness centers. The main approach of the book is based on energy considerations. Understanding how the body handles energy makes it possible to describe the effects of exercising and performance much more deeply. I would recommend this book to every exerciser, who likes to improve physically and understand background matters. Basically, it's a textbook for sports students. But people outside, like myself, can greatly benefit from it, as well.

An Excellent Reference Book
By Chan Joon Yee
This is the only reference book I have and need on Exercise Physiology. Most useful to me are chapters on performance enhacement, high altitude acclimatisation and physical training for seniors. The first few introductory chapters and the first few pages of each chapter remind me of my basic life sciences. The authors then focus on the application of cell biology to training. The thing I like most about this book, is that there is no "guru talk". Every piece of advice is based on currect research.

The book is divided into 7 sections. 1. Nutrition, 2. Energy production, 3. Energy Delivery & Utilisation, 3. Enhancement of Energy Capacity, 4. Environmental Stress, 5. Body Composition & Weight Control, 7. Successful Aging, Disease Prevention.

It's a very thick book, but the paper quality is high and the colourful illustrations make it a joy to read. However, this is not simple book for the average man on the street. There is nothing sensational here - just pure science. Readers without a background in the life sciences may not be able to follow.

"the book" on exercise physiology
By Alex
I am a Personal Training manager with a Physical Education undergraduate degree and Health Preservation and Rehabilitation graduate degree.
I consider that the science of exercise physiology should constitute the basic knowledge for anybody who wants to understands the way the human body functionates and acutely and chronicaly adapts to the exercise stimuli.
No matter you are(or preparing to become) a PE teacher, sport medicine specialist, personal trainer, physical therapist, athletic coach, etc, you should understand the science of exercise physiology.
Dr. McArdle's " Exercise physiology" is definetely one of the most complete books ever writen on the subject. With miriads of grafics and pictures, and tons of scientific research descriptions and results, the book is quite pleasing to read and very convincing.
With more than 1000 pages, definetelly worths its price and even more. Contains as much information as you could find in 3-4 good scientific books and much more than the complete colection of "Muscle and Fitness" starting from 1970.
You can find detailed informations together with all the book ilustrations and even 4 complete chapters at: [...]

The Power of Meaning: Crafting a Life That Matters, by Emily Esfahani Smith

In a culture obsessed with happiness, this wise, stirring book points the way toward a richer, more satisfying life.

Too many of us believe that the search for meaning is an esoteric pursuit—that you have to travel to a distant monastery or page through dusty volumes to discover life’s secrets. The truth is, there are untapped sources of meaning all around us—right here, right now.

To explore how we can craft lives of meaning, Emily Esfahani Smith synthesizes a kaleidoscopic array of sources—from psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, and neuroscientists to figures in literature and history such as George Eliot, Viktor Frankl, Aristotle, and the Buddha. Drawing on this research, Smith shows us how cultivating connections to others, identifying and working toward a purpose, telling stories about our place in the world, and seeking out mystery can immeasurably deepen our lives.

To bring what she calls the four pillars of meaning to life, Smith visits a tight-knit fishing village in the Chesapeake Bay, stargazes in West Texas, attends a dinner where young people gather to share their experiences of profound loss, and more. She also introduces us to compelling seekers of meaning—from the drug kingpin who finds his purpose in helping people get fit to the artist who draws on her Hindu upbringing to create arresting photographs. And she explores how we might begin to build a culture that leaves space for introspection and awe, cultivates a sense of community, and imbues our lives with meaning.

Inspiring and story-driven, The Power of Meaning will strike a profound chord in anyone seeking a life that matters.

Living a life that matters through the "four pillars" belonging, purpose, storytelling and transcendence
By Julee Rudolf
John Stuart Mill's words provide a perfect summary of the message of this book (p 16), "Those only are happy who have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness; on the happiness of others, on the improvement of mankind, even on some art or pursuit, followed not as a means, but as itself an ideal end."

In the introduction, the author shares her experiences with Sufism, her "parents ran a Sufi meeting house," then proceeds with the chapter that was the most fascinating to me as the parent of an introverted, deep thinking senior in high school, The Meaning Crisis, chock full of philosophical ideas and a discussion of suicide. One of the most disturbing facts in the book (and one I used in an article entitled Let's Unstigmatize Thoughts of Suicide) that comes from the CDC (p 22), "Each year, forty thousand Americans take their lives, and worldwide, that number is closer to a million." I'd imagined that the higher rate of suicide in developed than undeveloped countries had something to do with Maslow's Hierarchy, but Ms. Smith suggests the possibility that (p 23), "it is particularly distressing to be unhappy in a country where so many others are happy."

She follows this with four chapters corresponding to the pillars that support her message:
Belonging (p 49), "We all need to feel that we belong..."
Purpose (p 90), "a purpose-driven person is ultimately concerned...with making the world a better place."
Storytelling (p 104), "our storytelling impulse emerges from a deep-seated need all humans share: the need to make sense of the world."
Transcendence (p 133), "first, our sense of self washes away along with all, its petty concerns and desires. We then feel deeply connected to other people and everything else that exists in the world."

At that point in the book, I expect the conclusion or epilogue, but it's not to be. She includes a chapter entitled Growth, in which she puts forth (p 162), "The idea that we can grow to lead deeper and more meaningful lives through adversity." It supports Nietsche's contention (p 162), " “What does not kill me makes me stronger," with examples in support of it about persons who have gained strength from dealing with difficult circumstances, and a second additional chapter, Cultures of Meaning (p 192), "All across the country...people are using the pillars as a means to transform the institution in which we live and work, creating communities that value and build connections, celebrate purpose, provide opportunities for storytelling and leave space for mystery," which I think should have been the conclusion. Instead, Ms. Smith concludes with a discussion of death (p 217), "Contemplating death can actually help us, if we have the proper mindset, to lead more meaningful lives and to be at peace when our final moment on earth arrives," using research on those contemplating physician-assisted suicide to support the statement.

Best of the book: excellent research, anecdotes, interviews and other information in support of the idea that living a life in service of others, "Crafting a Life That Matters," helps bring meaning to humans and leads to happiness. Most chapters and arguments are very strong, like Chapters 1-5 and 7 (which seems like it should have been the Conclusion), the others, less so. Even though the story starts strong and finishes less so, it is definitely worth the read to remind us all that our society's materialistic, social media-heavy, happiness-seeking culture is the wrong path to happiness. On similar subjects: 10% Happier by Dan Harris, Coming Home by Dicken Bettinger and Natasha Swerdloff, and Listening is an Act of Love by Dave Isay.

When good storytelling meets the science of positive psychology
By ItalCali
The book illustrates the psychological research about the importance of living a life filled with meaning in an elegant narrative filled with thought-provoking stories. It is a joy to read and it will make you ponder about your life.

Meaning is one of the 5 ingredients of flourishing according to Seligman's PERMA theory of well-being (Positive emotions, Engagement, positive Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement; see the book "Flourishing"). Yet this dimension has been largely neglected in books inspired by positive psychology — until now. In this book Emily Esfahani Smith does a great job in illustrating what researchers have found regarding the importance of finding meaning in one's life, and why that matters.

As other reviewers noted, the author identifies 4 main pillars that lead to the sense of living a meaningful live. They are the following: a sense of belonging; a sense of purpose; a coherent and positive life narrative; and a sense of self-transcendence.

What makes this book stand out is the elegance with which the author is able to condense the science in an unobtrusive framework that informs and organizes the narrative - but that does not get in the way of the good storytelling which makes the book so inspiring. The reader will be introduced to stories and characters that will let him or her ponder about their own pursuit of meaning.

Two chapters in particular stood out for me: "the meaning crisis', because the struggles of Will Durant, Camus and Tolstoy that the author highlights have universal appeal and got me thinking about my own life and my own mentors; and "cultures of meaning", because it opens up a social dimension to what I always thought of mostly as an individual pursuit. As Emily Esfahani Smith points out, if we fail to provide positive answers to the need for belonging, purpose, storytelling and self-transcendence, then people might gravitate towards destructive solutions (e.g., ISIS) that paradoxically fill those human needs.

If you are looking for a book that is solidly built on science and yet reads almost like fiction, this is it.

PS: and for the psych geeks out there, no worries, the "Notes" section is pretty thick!

I am someone who has experienced a dark night of the soul, and wrestled with the question of the meaning of life. I spent years studying philosophy, psychology, and particularly the works of Viktor frankl, who pioneered a form of therapy called logotherapy, to address the quest for meaning. I believe that as time goes on Emily Esfahani's book, "The Power of Meaning" will be recognized as one of the most profound contributions to the issue of how to find meaning in life in our present time. The book is a pleasure to read, and will be a life saver for many people.
