Braces, Mean Girls, Crushes and Real-Life Teen Drama

Smile starts with Raina as a typical pre-teen...until she falls and her two front teeth fall out. She's not only in major pain, but scared, and her trip to the dentist doesn't yield the greatest news; they can put the one tooth they found back in but the other is stuck up in her gums, but she'll have to wear braces. Turns out, there was bone damage, and she endures the braces only to find that her teeth wind up embedded in her gums, leaving her feeling like she's a freak.

Her so-called friends don't help, with their perpetual teasing, but Raina adjusts to being a "brace-face" and weathers typical teenage crushes. As she moves on to a new high school, her friends keep on teasing her and playing pranks, until she finally decides she can seek out new friends who accept as she is.

It's hard not to wince at some of the tooth trials, but Raina is a trooper as she toughs out numerous orthodontist and endodondist and other "dontist" appointments, all rendered in Telgemeier's wonderful drawing style, which complements her story perfectly.

The book ends happily, with a big, toothy smile, and Raina learning that she can find friends who stick by her and don't make fun of her.

I am in middle school and this book made me feel special that I was strong. It made me feel to stand up for yourself and don't care what other people think. This book as a great message for 5 graders and middleschoolers, it inspired me to stay strong and it had a life that I have its totally realistic.

Exciting, fantastic, believable, leaves you wanting more! Charles Berlitz delves into the secrets and mysteries of "The Bermuda Triangle." His mastery of the subject allows him to intertwine this subject with several other theories and mysteries that give validity and truth to his premises of the origin of the Bermuda Triangle. I am an avid reader of science fiction, biographies, science and many other subjects. I really have a tremendous interest in researching more on the topics that Berlitz brought up. Some of those interesting subjects are The Philadelphia Experiment, Project Rainbow, Mayan Culture and UFO's. Books are written to educate and to encourage learning. Interesting but false

The very popularity of this book shows Berlitz captured the imagination of a lot of people. For this, the book deserves five stars. It shows he has a knack for imaginative writing.

However, the book is quite inaccurate as to facts. Recent scientific experiments have established that methane gas eruptions on the sea floor give rise to two phenomena. The gas bubbles cause boats to sink and plane engines to cut out. The experiments resulted in sinking boats. Nature, of course, gives rise to far more spectacular occasions of such methane gas bubble eruptions. It is known that these gas bubbles rise to the surface of the ocean and rise up into clouds. It has been demonstrated that one percent methane is sufficient to cause an airplane engine to cut out, especially of the Avenger type model aircraft. The clouds in the Bermuda triangle contain up to 20 percent methane. Flying through them would aggravate the problem for any pilot. Furthermore, methane gas, just ten percent of it, will cause the flight indicators to read that the plane is climbing, when in fact it is falling. In a cloud, where you cannot see anything below you, you could easily crash.

However, Flight 19 mentioned in this book of the five navey avengers was likely the result of psychological problems of the lead pilot. Recent understanding of flight psychology has shown that pilots can get spacially disoriented. The stress level increases and the pilot will get tunnel vision. Nothing will shake him from his belief because nothing can shake him from his fear. As a result, he won't trust his flight instruments. We know that this lead pilot thought he was in the Florida Keys when in fact he wasn't. In combination with the above scenario of methane gas, he may have been stressed because he couldn't see where he was going and because his instrument panel went off the charts.

The Big Foot legend mentioned by Berlitz is likely the result of University of Washington professors who wanted tenure. Furthermore, it kept the evolution myth alive since no missing link otherwise exists.

Berlitz mentioned the lochness monster or "plesiasaur." Recently, on the national geographic channel, a sperm whale was cut open and inside was found a completely intact plesiasaur. Therefore, nessy is plausibly a real creature.

Not a bad christmas read!

All she wanted was a perfect Christmas...

This is the story of a woman trying to find her happy ending. Lydia hasn't had the best luck when it comes to relationships, something always seemed to go wrong until she met Stephen. Stephen seemed nice enough, stable and secure. Before she realized what was happening, she'd been dating Stephen for two years and had moved in with him & settled into a comfortable life.

Now it's December and with Christmas around the corner Lydia has convinced Stephen into spending it together at her friend's new Getaway Hotel/B&B but she had no idea that when she got there, she'd be snowed in and stuck with her boyfriend, ex-boyfriend and the hot handyman. Now she's got to figure out who and what she wants and quickly because Stephen's about to propose. Obviously, all hell breaks loose.

Lydia's a vivacious and funny character and she had me laughing at various occasions while reading this book. However, I didn't like any of the other characters much. I disliked Stephen from the minute he appeared, Jack was alright till his idiotic excuse for bailing on Lydia & Will, well I didn't know much about him to even form a real opinion. He seemed a little conceited to me, really. Lydia's friends were alright though most of the time they just got on my nerves, like Joanna for example. She wanted to be Samantha from Sex & The City and a clingy girlfriend at the same time and it just didn't work for me. Alex & Kate were alright but again, Jim was just annoying.

Despite my problems with the novel, I think Scarlett Bailey's a talented Chick Lit writer. Lydia is a fun, witty character so I'm sure Bailey could create more like Lydia. 'The Night Before Christmas', though lacking in Christmas festivities, was a magical read! The novel takes place in a - thanks to Scarlett's vivid descriptions - beautiful setting and while the book didn't focus on Christmas much, it did have a holiday feel to it!

I enjoyed reading 'The Night Before Christmas'. Sure, it may not be one of the best Chick Lit I've read but it's a good debut novel nonetheless. Besides, I'm a sucker for happy endings =)

A whole lotta action around Christmas!

I initially picked this book earlier and couldn't get into it. So I put it down and picked it up again today and was immediately pulled in. I didn't know Scarlett Bailey is a pseudonym for Rowan Coleman until today, but it just goes to show how versatile her writing is. I enjoyed this book as much as any other she's published under her own name.

Anyhow, to get to back to the book, Lydia thinks this year will be the perfect Christmas. She's always had bad luck when it comes to them, but this year, she has a lovely boyfriend and is going to spend it with him and her three best girlfriends and their significant others. Imagine her surprise when the one that got away shows up with her best friend and roommate. The addition of a sexy local only complicates things further. Lydia's dream of a perfect Christmas has been ruined, but has it really?

I liked Lydia quite bit. She was a bombshell but doesn't know it. She was thrown for many a loop but handled it well for the most part. In fact all of the characters were quite likable. There was no one person who was "evil." Besides Lydia and Will, Tilly, Jake, and Gracie were my favorite characters. Tilly and Jake are kids. They provide some serious comic relief. There's also an incident with a gigantic turkey that had me trying to smother my laughter so no one else could hear me.

To come to the point, this book is wonderful. I'm glad Christmas is coming soon, and if this time of year fills your heart with cheer, you'll definitely enjoy this book as well.

fun, easy read

Cute, fun, easy read. More of a 3 1/2 star read for me, but since there's no half ratings, 3 will do.

I enjoy a good seasonal read, but the problem is that while it's easy to find the seasonal part, it's a bit harder to find the good part. Usually holiday books have some sort of magical star or intervening Santa - thankfully this book had neither.
It did, however, have loads of British charm and hijinks. And while I loved the girlfriend friendships, the drafty old inn, the local pub and the leading man, I did not appreciate the editing errors. Missing words, really? How does this happen nowadays?

If this book was a bit less choppy, it would be a solid 4 star for me.

Informative and Useful Guide To BDSM

This book gave some really great information offering up 71 useful tips for Dom/Masters. There were tips on how to communicate with your sub properly. How to properly express yourself to your sub. While this book appears to be geared towards newbs. I think any seasoned Dom/Master could find very useful information here. I have been both submissive and Mistress. And I found the tips presented here helpful from both angles actually. And because it says, Dom/Masters, the information here is just as useful to the female counterpart (Mistress).

I have read Volume 1 in this series as well. And I think this author has a good handle on what he is talking about. And I look forward to reading more this author.

Excellent tips

The first thing that any Dom should know is that the sub has the control. Don’t believe me? Take a look at this book. In a consensual relationship, the sub is the one to stop things or ask (beg) for more. The author makes it clear from the start that this is important. There are many facets to a Dom/sub relationship, this book touches on some of them. One thing to keep in mind, this is the second book however, for the Dom that is a little past the basics this can be handy. Another thing that the author makes clear is that boundaries need to be established from the start. Included are tips on running a scene, taking the Alpha role at all times, how to guide your sub, and avoiding common BDSM clich�s that could ruin the moment. These steps are clear and concise and an honest must have for any Dom wishing to have a fulfilling BDSM relationship and any sub who wants to know more about what to expect from their Dom, and what to be wary of. If you’re looking to be a better Dom you need this book.

The illustrations alone are worth it!

The "Essential Guide" series to the Star Wars universe has (perhaps surprisingly) never had a book devoted entirely to the "Force". And this one does not disappoint! The attempt at an "in-universe" historical style (supposedly, the "author" is a Jedi in the New Jedi Order) makes it immersive and fun to read. The information deals with a wide variety of Force-related subjects that any Star Wars fan would be interested in: from the origins and history of the Jedi and Sith orders to the construction of lightsabers and Jedi martial arts. The only thing that I personally felt to be missing is a more "scientific" or "physical" explanation of the Force and its workings (like in-universe scientific theories on how the Force is produced and how it interacts with regular matter and energy), but that might have conflicted with the "historian's perspective" that it adopts instead.
Despite any shortcomings in the text itself, however, the illustrations alone make it worth the complete 5 stars! They are simply breathtaking... and the amount of time and sweat put into them by the artists must have been staggering. It's strange to say it, but it feels more like an art book than a dry listing of Star Wars lore! Any Star Wars fan would love these wonderful works of art!
