A wonderful deep story of two cultures

This should have 10 stars. I an 83 yr. old that has read over a thousand books since I got an adult library card at age 6. I have had to slow down my reading because of eye trouble, but the ability of the paperwhite to increase font size had helped me keep my speed up. But this book is the best thing I come across in years. I was born in upper Minnesota and spent time on the Sioux reservation. I've also read some things about Custer and The Little Big Horn. All were weak in early detail and the culture. This book delves deeply into BOTH the lives of Custer and Crazy Horse.and their opposite cultures. For anyone interested in the early West and the lives of the Indian tribes as opposed to the upbringing of Custer will find it all here.

This book is as educational as it is enjoyable. It is nearly a five star. There is a great deal of information on incidents and details of both high adventure-war with the whites and raids on other Indian groups- and everyday life in both the Indian villages and the white towns and cities. There is a very good look into the life of a boy growing up in American Indian (PC-Native American) society.
In war the Indians emphasized bravery and the individual so the Indian concept of leadership-"I will follow you if I want but you will not tell me to do anything" was news to me and I have studied war in more than one US service school.
The illumination of the lack of decency and moral character in the upper ranks of the US Army was depressing. Treaties made with no intention of abiding by them on the part of the Army while the Indian assumed the treaty was fixed and not to be compromised. This placed the Indian at a great disadvantage.
The politics of promotion in the General ranks is brought out as is the pecking order among the wives of the Generals.

Very readable, informative story of the post-Civil War Plains.

I thought this was an excellent examination of the parallel societies of the plains in the post-Civil War period. Although I wonder how accurate the information about Crazy Horse can possibly be, I was still fascinated by the contrast between the motives of these two historical figures. Although they shared some important traits (such as impetuousness and bravery), I found the chasm between them to be more interesting. Sadly, Custer's culture was to completely overwhelm that of Crazy Horse in a way that Crazy Horse never could have imagined. It is the ultimate tragedy of the American experience: in order to advance the interests of the United States, white Americans were willing to destroy other cultures, whether in North America or Africa. Thankfully, Ambrose does not get bogged down in many of those discussions, but chooses instead to focus on the way things happened, for better or worse. Of course, it is easy to draw one's own conclusions when faced with the facts, and Ambrose allows the reader to do so (for the most part - there is a bit of apologism for the US government). I would strongly recommend this book for the casual historian looking for a good read. I definitely feel like I learned a lot from this book.
