Preparing To Be a Help Meet, by Debi Pearl

Being a good help meet starts long before marriage. It is a mindset, a learned habit, a way of life established as a young unmarried girl or at least that s the way it should be. Nearly every wife will confess that the first year or two of married life was... how shall I say ... a frustrating learning experience. Most girls spend plenty of time planning for their wedding, but make no preparation for the weeks and years to follow. Many wives are provoked to bitterness during the first year and never get over it. All this could so easily be avoided with simple instruction. It was with good reason God said let the aged women teach the younger. Trial and error is not the best teacher when it comes to marriage. It is much less painful to learn beforehand what God has to say about your role as a help meet to that special man God will bring into your life. It is the older women who have experienced the joys of a good marriage whom God has appointed to pass along his instructions. That is what has been done in this new book Preparing to Be a Help Meet. Preparing to Be a Help Meet contains six sweet love stories written by wives sharing their experiences about how God taught them to be the help meets they are today. Three of the stories are from wives that have been married over 40 years. Three stories are by new brides who, before marriage, were trained to be the help meet God intended. All the love stories are beautiful, and will show you how wonderful it is to walk together in God s light. In addition to the six personal testimonies, this book is full of short stories from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. The book consists of funny tales, ideas of how to gain a good man s attention, and even a tragic testimony. All teach important lessons! You will meet Grabbers and Hidden Flowers , and discover how to avoid being either. The chapter on Antsy Babes will remind you why patience is so important. You will be warned as you read stories of how texting, e-mailing and other forms of cyberspace have destroyed many budding relationships and even marriages. An important part of this book is instruction on preparing for your future by saving money, developing skills, gathering information on cooking, health, and many other topics. Girls will see how one wise young woman planned her wedding God s way. Along the way the reader will learn what to pack in her Heavenly Treasure Chest. A shy girl Hidden Flower who has never had a man interested in her, will learn how to become visible to godly men. Brassy girls Grabbers will be shown a mirror so they will see how good men view pushy females. Impatient girls Antsy Babes will learn patience. Girls will be instructed on how young men seek out a wife and what they are looking for in a possible mate. They will find out what turns young men away and what causes a young man to consider a girl. In the last chapter, several men speak up to say what they really appreciate in their wives. And of course, several single, wife-hunting males speak out here and there to give their opinion of what I have written. On a more sober note, the age-old question, How do I know if this man is the will of God for me? will be answered through Scripture, wisdom, and example. As I was finishing the manuscript, three young women read and evaluated Preparing to Be a Help Meet. They all said the book was totally captivating and that they would be better daughters and wives for having read it. We had several married women read through the manuscript. They commented that any lady that enjoyed Created to Be a Help Meet will LOVE Preparing to Be a Help Meet; they will learn as much from it as they did from Created. As the author, I believe the girl or married woman who reads Preparing to Be a Help Meet will close the book knowing that God answers prayer.

Review
Chapter 6 was my favorite. It explains how marriage is a triangle between God, a man and a woman, and that we complete the perfect picture of Christ. - Shalom, queen of his heartHelps a young girl shift her focus from self-centeredness to honoring Christ, especially in the way she relates to her husband or husband-to-be, no matter what type he is: prophet, priest or king. - Shalom, queen of his heart. An eye-opening, inspiring adventure that has helped me to grow and mature as a woman. - Kirsten, princess-in-waiting. I love this book! As a wife it inspires me to be the woman my husband fell in love with. And I m so excited to be able to share this wisdom with young girls. I can t wait to start a bible study! - Kristen, queen of his heart. My favorite part is the chapter on prayer; it has made a big difference in my life as a single girl. If God lays a man on your heart the best thing you can do is to pray for him. Preparing will definitely be at the front of my shelf and the number one book I'll pass on to my friends. - Elizabeth, princess-in-waiting --Manuscript Readers

I recently participated in a women's Bible study related to this book, an intense analyzation of the virtuous The woman in Proverbs 31. What I learned has been a momentous influence on my life, and has opened my eyes to how much room I have for improvement. With prayer for wisdom and by God's abundant grace I'm on my way to becoming a woman whose worth is far above rubies. - Renƒ©e, princess-in-waiting --Manuscript Reader

Debi has done it again; this book is loaded with great topics for discussion! Single girls and married ladies: add it to your Bible studies or classes. I'm married and I absolutely loved it! Mothers, take time to read this book. It's a great way to connect with where your teenage daughters are in their lives. - Yolanda, queen of his heart --Manuscript Reader

About the Author
Debi Pearl was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, in good homes, by parents who were faithful to point her to God. As a teenager Debi was actively involved in witnessing, ministering to the sick and wounded veterans, and serving in hospitals in Memphis. About twenty three years ago, Debi and her husband Mike moved to rural Tennessee where they continued in the work by holding Bible studies in local homes, which eventually led to regular meetings of the local body of believers, and the starting of the prison ministry where Mike still ministers every Saturday. God eventually led Mike and Debi into the ministry of writing on child training and family relationships, which they now feel is their life s work and calling. The result of this work led to the formation of No Greater Joy Ministries (NGJ), a 501 (c) (3). The largest project that NGJ has ever been involved in is the Good and Evil Project, a work to translate the Illustrated Bible Storybook Good and Evil (G & E) into 100 languages. G & E has 25 languages in print, and another 50 languages in the process of being translated or edited. Prior to authoring The Vision, her first novel in a planned series, Debi has authored or co-authored 5 previous books. To date over 1,000,000 of her books have been sold in several languages. Her current book Preparing To Be a Help Meet has had an advance sale of over 5,000 books. Her first book in the Help Meet series, Created To Be His Help Meet has sold over 350,000 copies in several languages. In addition to the child training ministry, the work of the prison ministry, missions, and Bible studies, the Pearls have an active family life. They have been married 37 years; have 5 children, and 17 grandchildren with more on the way. --

Not Worth It

My bible study group at college was given this book to work through this semester. Ms. Pearl has completely unrealistic personal opinions that she mixes with some biblical principles when many of her opinions can not be supported biblically. She spouts ridiculous ideals for women to uphold at housewives, basically condemning any other way of raising children or running households. She tells women that they are smarter than doctors, should be experts on all topics known to mankind and should live only to please their husbands in every way possible. While it is biblical to respect the authority of your husband, relationships between husband and wives are represented in the book as then man dominating the woman, doing whatever he wants and expecting the wife to just handle all of his choices. There is no focus on a woman's personal relationship with God. The personal examples of love stories she gives are completely unrealistic for normal girls, no one has a random friend just propose to them out of nowhere and gets married a week later! She discourages courtship and getting to know your potential spouse before marriage, which is extremely unwise and irrational.

This book was a waste of time and extremely discouraging to read both alone and in a bible study format. I would not recommend it to anyone.

READ THIS!
By Kendra M
I highly recommend this book for women who are courting, of age to court or even, if you just want your daughter to be preparing for the day when she becomes a wife. I read this book several months before I got engaged and now that I am married, I will say it has made a world of difference.

It talks about the importance of being mindful, prepared, chaste and many other biblical characteristics that are expected of a good woman. My husband (we got married in September 2015), was surprised by how much I had already researched and was very thankful that I had taken the time to learn so many things about health, pregnancy, childbirth, home making, marriage, and cooking before we got married because it has made his life (and mine) easier plus more enjoyable. I was already a frugal person and a great cook thanks to years of practice, but I think this book was a great reminder non-the-less. We decided not to use any methods of child prevention (after I'd done my research on birth controls, I discovered that the Almighty doesn't actually recommend "waiting" to have children, but rather, He says that they are blessing straight from Him, and the beginning of wisdom/knowledge is fearing and respecting the Lord Yahweh/Jehovah. So if He says they're a blessing I will not tell him, NO thanks but I know best and they are an 'inconvenience" right now) so before we got married I had done lots of research on costs of child rearing, ways to shrink those costs, and things I needed to know about childbirth to mentally and emotionally prepare. In the end it has really paid off, since I am now 6 1/2 months pregnant (with only 15 pounds gained, because I found out that women shouldn't be gaining much more than 22lbs during pregnancy when they're of a healthy weight beforehand) and I have been very healthy/aware of what's okay and what isn't and when anything that I know is unusual (because I've done my research and been prepared thanks to this book) I can call my midwife and we can address it if we need to (which we paid off in two months, thanks to our frugality! Not because the midwife was cheap).

Other books I recommend are: Love Your Husband/ Love Yourself by Jennifer Flanders, Dressing with Dignity, Painless Childbirth (by Giuditta Tornetta), Childbirth without fear by Dick Read Grantly, and Ina May's Guide to Natural Childbirth.

Also for those of you who do wonder about the costs of raising children, especially a baby, this is an awesome brief article that will definitely give you some hope and shed some much needed light on the topic: [...]
(also factor in how much the midwife or hospital will cost and that's the cost of the first year) :)
