wonderful waldorf knitting

This is probally the best childrens knitting book that I know of. Its wonderful step by step illustrations will show a child begining to knit how to. The progects are things that children would actually want to knit. Animals mostly which is wonderful for them to play with after. Also know that some basic sewing with yarn skills would be needed to sew up the animals when completed. A great first knitting book for children.

Not only for children

This an extremely engaging little book of simple animal knits. Unfortunately my grandchildren are past this age but the animals are cute fast and fun to knit for little gifts, for either children or adults. It would be a good book to teach one's self to knit, as the information is so clearly presented. It is a british book. I expect that is why it is not discounted more heavily.

The Waldorf classic for 1st and 2nd grade

This book is essential if you're a Waldorf teacher, parent, or homeschooler. The knit verse, purl verse, casting off verse, and so on are not all that hard to find and they're certainly not the reason to buy this book. You can Google this and find plenty of examples for free. But what you can't easily find online, or in any other knitting book, are high interest (i.e. stuffed animal) patterns that are easy for the beginning child knitter. This book excels in this area. All the instructions of how to knit are included (undoing a stitch, undoing a row, recovering a dropped stitch, shaping your knitting by decreasing, making a pompom, etc.) but the PATTERNS ARE
Knit stitch only:
striped ball
lamb
lion
pig
elephant
doll
horse
Using both knit and purl stitch:
cat
chicken
mother sea otter
boy with hands in his pockets
girl with hands in her pockets
In the classroom I would give each child a large index card on which to write each verse as I taught it to them and they kept these in their knitting baskets for reference during independent work time. I retyped each of the knitting patterns so they were one on a page and made up a binder with each pattern sheet in page protectors. When a child was ready to make a new animal, I would photocopy the pattern for them and they could write on it (their start date, what yarn they used) and check off each row as they completed it. Those patterns would go home with the knitted animals so they had them and could make more companion animals of that type independently at home.
I have dozens of knitting books but this is the one I turn to again and again when I'm teaching children to knit. They just love making these sweet and simple animals!
