Grade 5 Up-Tolan revisits the Filkins family, introduced in Save Halloween! (Morrow, 1993). This time the focus is on Mark, the second-by a few minutes-of twin sons as he begins to create a separate identity for himself. Until now, being almost indistinguishable from his brother hasn't really bothered him. When their father asks the boys to deliver the sermon at a mid-week prayer service, Mark finds that he's not as excited at the prospect as Matthew is, even though both of them have always assumed that they would be preachers when they grew up. After the service, Mark begins to question whether this career path is what he really wants. The arrival in town of a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who works in genetic engineering ultimately leads Mark to question his faith as well. Colin Hendrick is dying of cancer and has returned to his hometown to spend his final days with his father. He is also helping Mark's class with a science research project. For the first time in his life Mark is doing something without his twin, and he likes it. He also begins to pray that Colin will be healed, and soon has his family, friends, and even the churches in town praying with him. Tolan has created believable, likable characters who are wrestling with serious spiritual and emotional issues and describes their struggles with sensitivity, compassion, and respect. While some may question the use of a miracle to resolve Mark's crisis of faith, it's not the miracle readers might expect, and it is a satisfying conclusion to Mark's story. It is also very satisfying to see religion treated as an important and integral part of people's lives, without either negative stereotyping or heavy-handed preaching.

Mark and his twin brother, Matthew, have been raised to follow the family tradition of being Fundamentalist preachers. During eighth grade, though, Mark begins to find his relationship with Matthew suffocating. As he begins pulling away, he forms a friendship with a Nobel Prize^-winning scientist whose work in genetic engineering seems morally wrong to Mark's family. Taught to believe that prayer brings results, Mark goes through a crisis when his fervent prayers seem to be going unanswered. Tolan does not flinch from setting up a truly difficult dilemma for her character, and she realistically portrays the confused feelings of an adolescent attempting to individuate, and of a young Christian trying to figure out whom to believe. The pace moves gently at first, then inexorably, and the story comes to a poignant, believable conclusion. Such well-written fiction exploring Christian themes is rare, and many libraries will want to snap this up. Susan Dove Lempke

Raised in a Christian family by a father who is a staunch fundamentalist minister, twins Matthew and Mark Filkins come to terms with their religious beliefs when a Nobel Prize-winning geneticist returns to the town of Bradyville, Ohio. Colin Hendrick is dying of cancer and wants to spend his final days in his hometown. He teaches Mark and Matthew's eight-grade class about the web of life and the ordinary miracle of the minuscule organisms that fill the air and water. Even before Colin shows up, Mark has begun to question the ``twin thing,'' and to assert his individuality. On the role of science, he has genuine disagreements with Matthew and their father, who both believe that genetic engineering is tampering with God's creation; Mark takes Colin's view, that God and man are co-creators. Tolan (The Face In the Mirror, 1998, etc.) exhibits laudatory scope as she attempts to reconcile the strict beliefs of the fundamentalist family from Save Halloween! (1993) with the modern world; she strives for evenhandedness, though often at the expense of the story, interrupting the narrative for long religious and scientific explanations. The characterization of Mark is both well-rounded and believable; readers will identify with this down-to-earth teenager as he struggles to find his own identity, understand the values of his parents, and come to his own conclusions about the merits of faith and science. Extraordinary

A young boy begins to question his fundamental Christian upbringing, especially as he builds a friendship with a scientist whose beliefs are certainly different than what he has been taught. The answers to these questions grow in importance as the scientist faces the final days in a fatal illness. Will the scientist's life and/or possible death provide any answers?
Tolan does a beautiful job in handling the conflict young adults face as they grow independent and must choose to accept or reject the teaching of the adults that have been in their lives...parents, teachers, mentors. She strikes the perfect balance in presenting both viewpoints without making the Christians look like unintelligent, heavy-handed Bible bashers and without making the scientist look like the clear winner due to his academic intelligence and sympathetic condition. This book would be a great family read-aloud discussion starter.
Personally, there was something a little corny about the ending, but it was a satisfying and thought-provoking resolution.

I felt this book brought out a whole new story that hasn't been shared before.Unlike the common Cinderella stories you hear about, this story is about a boy, Mark who sruggled in fighting to save his friends life.This story was super emotional, because the friendship between Mark and Colin was built around a science project, but when one of the friends becomes seriously ill, they both have to realize the are going to lose eachother.
It was touching and taught the importance of being friends. This story taught, to me, that it is improtant to know that two people may look alike, but at heart they are two seperate people. I feel this is improtant to know, because each of the twins felt as though the needed to be treated seperately.
I hope you enjoy this book as muchas I did!

WI loved Ordinary Miracles from the very first page. It was wonderful, and full of meaning. It was touching, heart-warming, funny, and sad all at teh same time. Stephanie S. Tolan did an extraordinary job on this book. With detail, wonderful characters like Mark and Colin, a great storyline, memorable and honorable details and words, this book is very well written and just a great book to read or read to others.
